Welcome all to my first live progressive blog for ABC's reality show American Inventor - Season 2 Episode 1 (201).
We here at Inventor Spot are glad to see last year's fans back, and hopefully we'll get some fresh viewers as well. The show should have just started, and I am eagerly anticipating this season's hopeful inventors. We should see some interesting stuff come across the screen tonight as the judges—George Forman, Peter Jones, Pat Croce, and Sara Blakely—try and slowly and but surely narrow down the applicants to those worthy of enough to become the next American Inventor.
I'll be updating the blog during commercial breaks, so ,in order not to put a lot of stress on our system, try to check back every 10-20 minutes for new comments and such. And PLEASE! Feel free to comment on anything and everything about American Inventor. We're eager to get your responses.
On a final note, I just want to remind everyone to keep checking the site for updates on American Inventor. Later in the season we'll be having live blog sessions with season one finalists so look out for those. We should have a lot of other special things going on around the site too. If you can't tell, we're super psyched for American Inventor!
Part 1:
So here we after our first commercial break of American Inventor, and we've yet to get a yes from any of the judges. Just from the opening credits it looked like we had some pretty crazy stuff going on this season. As the clips reel rolled I saw stuff that looked good, stuff that looked really bad, people crying, people cheering, people yelling...all the stuff that makes for great reality TV.
So after a long lead in introducing the judges and showing their expensive homes and toys, tonight, we begin the search for the American Inventor on the West coast.
The first three hopefuls--Jamshid Hatami, Kim Douglas and Richard Dessert Jr and Sr--were all resoundingly denied, and for good reason. Their inventions were obviously pointless. First we had a device that kept your had on your head, followed by a barf, er, "arf" bag for dogs, and last was a big aluminum bag that, when worn, got people out of a burning house safely. But, how many dogs do you know that actually get car sick? And did James Bond every worry about his hat? However, I can see why we began with these three: they are prime examples of just how many people out there have invention ideas, and it never ceases to amaze me what the American people can come up with. Hopefully we'll see a finalist in the next segment...
Part 2:
Sorry if I'm not too specific in this section; we're still working out some site kinks. But I love how we already have the catchphrase of the season: Just keep punchin', courtesy of Mr. Forman. Maybe because it's his first season on the show but he's going pretty easy on some of the contestants. I'd probably do the same--I hate being mean to people. He seems to be the Paula Abdul of American Inventor.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm ready to see the first invention we know will make it through; that one thing that makes me go "Yeah, I know I and everyone else out there needs that." Keep posting responses for what we've seen so far.
Part 3:
Wow, the Asian guy was rather...animated. His idea--a breathalyzer key that tells you when you've had too much to drink and thus doesn't allow you start your car--had good intentions, but Sara was right, the technology is a little dated. But entertaining, no? American Inventor is attracting some characters.
How about Anthony Moebest? I love seeing kids on the show because it happens often that the simple mind of a child can come up with great inventions. And see here, Anthony's detachable pack of baby wipes (set on the front of disposable diapers) is a very simple idea and rather clever for a 10 year old. But, as the judges pointed out, it's not so much an invention as a novelty. But he'll probably sell it to Pampers and be loaded in no time. And look at George, what a champ.
The rest continues on the next page...

Gary Severen's "Pot Sniffer"
Submitted on June 7th, 2007 by Alana (not verified)I think I might actually buy the pot sniffer if it was for a cat litter box. That's a lot more useful. Maybe Gary will read this...
tree hydrant
Submitted on June 7th, 2007 by Anonymous (not verified)A fire alarm in the angel will work just as good. He only had a drawing, but had tears and fire suit get up. I could draw anything and not show exactlly how it works. He wants the $50,000 for the development people to actually invent it!
George is knows it's "B.S."!
Submitted on June 7th, 2007 by Anonymous (not verified)If you were at any of the auditions you know this is B.S.! They double screened these peoples inventions before sending them to George and the rest to judge. They are expected to say "no". So George not being an "uncle Tom "says "YES"! Ha!
Need wacky separate
Submitted on June 7th, 2007 by Anonymous (not verified)The show needs to separate the "WACKY" from the honestly good. The pre-screeners look like morons this way. The first show was pathetic and really the best marketable invention was the bicycle hub. It's cooll on cars when seen stoipped at a light the hub keeps spinning. The bicycle will do the same, except it will look like both wheels are actually turning. Only one side is needed because the bike rides to one side of the road. In other words the pre-judges in all their effort may have got this one wrong, or right wrong or whatever! Ha!
Rosie O' Doll
Submitted on June 7th, 2007 by Anonymous (not verified)It doesn't take the Rev. Jery Falwell to discern what the Therapy buddy is. Qoute; "Peter and Simon get together and have a Therapy baby! " THE INVENTOR WALKS off with his same sex friend? There may be a market if Donald wants to give one to Rosie! She needs therapy. Ha!

I don't think a comments
Submitted on June 7th, 2007 by MichelleI don't think a comments section on American Inventor is the right format for your question.
You should instead go post it in the forums where we regularly evaluate inventions and give people feeback about them.
Also, please stop stuffing the comments with your links. It's ok to have them but the way you do it is too heavy handed. I've edited your posts.
Thanks and welcome and I look forward to the discussion of your product in the forums.
New Judges?
Submitted on June 7th, 2007 by Shauna (not verified)They should have ditched the editors, not the judges. Last year would have been more entertaining if it weren't for the repetitiveness. They showed the same things over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.
Especially the crazy people with bad inventions that were only on for shock value. Then when it came down to the reason we all wanted to watch the show (to see the process of developing and marketing an invention), they cut it down to a single episode! duh!
The show was hard to watch for that reason. The old judges were much better than this season.
And this season should have started with a recap or "where are they now" from last years finalists. Because where are they, really?
Anthony: "Incredibly Smart" or "Brilliant " Idea?
Submitted on June 8th, 2007 by Anonymous Not Forgetful (not verified)Sorry, but I don't agree his idea makes him "brilliant" (just capable of reasoning or predicting a logical sequence of events--dirty diapers/baby wipes) or that adhering detachable baby wipes on diapers is even a good idea. What may sound "practical" or convenient is not necessarily do-able. In fact, I would argue that it is potentially dangerous to the child. No diaper should have unnecessary detachable parts--especially small, plastic, and/or toxic (?) ones.
How long did it take for parents (and others) to realize that plastic bags and other small objects are hazardous to children? If/when a child picks off the detachable section (or it wears off), the child is now holding a potential suffocation, choking, and/or poisonous object. How "convenient" will the worst scenario be to parents? [HEADLINE: My Baby Died Because I Could Never Remember Wipes]
Baby wipes can be stored near (or in) a box of diapers--or a package can be attached to the box (if THAT much has to be done for "forgetful" people). If the diaper-changer needs a diaper, the wipes should already be nearby, but they don't have to be ON the diaper.
If a person can't remember that when changing a diaper s/he will need baby wipes, I suppose Anthony and his idea may sound brilliant from that perspective.
(I do think Anthony presented his idea well and shows a lot of potential.)
Board games
Submitted on June 9th, 2007 by Anonymous (not verified)Toy companies are looking for all electronic games. Board games are the 1950's & sixties. Sorry! You can email info@nextoy.com for an evaluation, etc.
I own the carbib, and the autobib trademarks
Submitted on June 15th, 2007 by Steel (not verified)This will be interesting. I obviously like the fact that the autobib went to the next level. So much so that I invented this back in the 80's. ABC could be in for a little trademark infringement. Maybe then I can go on the show and present the "original carbib".
www.thecarbib.com environmentally green, manufactured in the US.
Anthony Moebest
Submitted on June 15th, 2007 by Susana (not verified)I would love to get in contact with this boy and tell him to keep up the good work! I'm a mother of 4 under 5 years old, and his idea is GREAT! simple, yet great! We would totally buy it! I hope he sells the idea to Pampers or Huggies!
Comments from Season I judge Doug Hall on Season II
Submitted on June 22nd, 2007 by Anonymous (not verified)Don't Take It PersonallyJune 14th, 2007 by Doug --> I've been flooded with e-mails from folks who tried out for American Inventor - Season 2 with an invention that they feel is - "much better than what they see on tv."
PLEASE don't take it personally -- as one of my fellow judges said last year as we spent 12 hours a day seeing contestant after contestant
"American Inventor isn't a contest - it's the GONG SHOW"
That might be a little harsh - then again maybe not.. Net - don't take rejection personally -- American Inventor is not the Nobel Prize competition - it's just a TV show -- a reality tv show.
Myself - I didn't get to see the first week's show - but saw last night's episode.
Congrats to Ricky DeRennaux with his custom build racers -- He's been on Brain Brew radio with David Wecker and I - and has corresponded by e-mail with me. He's the real deal - he sent me prototypes some time ago -- they ROCK!
Regarding the Christmas Tree fire extinguisher - Peter -- get a life.
Not a wise choice. It's been patented - in numerous forms - a number of times. I know because years ago I helped design one for a client....(there I go .. can't get away from sharing my past experiences).
Anyways - the cost of his design will be amazingly high. Frankly, a Halon fire extinguisher ball hung on the ceiling can accomplish the same end benefit for a fraction of the cost. That's what I would do.
Overall - the show provides decent entertainment. I especially like seeing Peter sitting so uncomfortably in his $800 suit in those soft confy chairs!
To be serious....
I really enjoyed working with Peter, Mary Lou and Ed. They're all awesome folks. (Remember what you see is what Simon "creates" in the edit suite - and is not meant to be a portrayal of the truth.) Peter and I have met for dinner in London. He's really trying to make ths show work. He really cares.
I wish the Season 2 judges the best of luck - America really needs to get inspired when it comes to inventing.
That said - don't judge your invention based on what you see on tv.
Don't judge America's ability to invent based on what you see on tv.
