The 2016 Chevrolet Crossvolt EV/CUV Could Be Unveiled At The 2015 Detroit Auto Show

Pay attention to that car behind the curtain, it just might be a compact crossover version of the 2016 Chevy Volt. The on again, off again EV/CUV appears to be on again since GM filed for a trademark on the name “Crossvolt”, and some type of vehicle bearing that name might just make its debut in Detroit this January.

“Crossvolt” certainly sounds better than “Volt MPV5”, a compact crossover fitted with the Volt's drivetrain dating from 2010. The next year, GM submitted an application to trademark the Crossvolt name but didn't follow through; the application expired yet it was renewed this past summer.

Meanwhile, spy shots showed a hybrid-engined mule wearing modified Chevy Orlando clothing undergoing road tests in 2013. It was obvious big things were in the works for the Volt... or were there?

GM seemed to have no real sense of urgency in expanding the Volt line, and while the General dithered and delayed other players were getting into the game. By 2014, the versatile green car field boasted worthy competitors like the Ford C-Max Energi, the Toyota Prius V, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive and the Kia Soul EV.

Once again, Chevy's late to join the party and that's assuming the rumors regarding the Crossvolt are even true. We'll find out soon enough – when the curtain rises at Chevy's Detroit Auto Show display. (via FOX News, Autoblog, and Le Blog Auto)
