The International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) is one of the most prestigious international design competitions in the world. And the 2010 IDEA was so competitive that there were three Best in Shows awarded.
The Slingbox 700U, developed by NewDealDesign LLC and SlingMedia Inc, the simple box that can turn any computer or mobile device into an HDTV wherever they are. Just plug and play... that is, if your TV provider lets you.

The Easy Latrine by Jeff Chapin was developed especially for a sanitation project in Cambodia, developed with funding from USAID and the World Bank Water and Sanitation Program.
The Latrine is being built and sold by entrepreneurial Cambodians and purchased by villagers. It consists of a pan, a bucket of water, a ladle, and pipes to connect a hut to the latrine after it is buried in the ground. The latrine has three receptacles made of concrete and bound by the ash of rice husks, a locally available material.
One Easy Latrine costs $25 and 2,500 of them have already been purchased.

The third IDEA 2010 Best in Show is something we all need: an entire redesign of detergent - not just the package but the product. Did you know that the 2 gallon jug you try to tip into your little dosing cup is full of... mostly water? Well, the Method Products folks found that out and produced a very concentrated detergent with a precise 4-pump dispenser for each load of wash - Method Laundry Detergent - 20 ounces for 50 loads of wash. And, of course, detergent and package are eco-friendly.
