Beach Resident Casts New Fishing Invention

Since sticking to basic fishing techniques can be quite boring, one inventor decided to reel in a few ideas to make the hobby more enjoyable.

Shawn Gregory, a Seagrove resident, has created a fishing kayak that’s bound to take the sport to a whole new level. Instead of using a bigger fishing boat, the modified kayak can be powered by paddles or a small electric motor that hooks up to a battery. Not only does this invention help at a time when gas prices are obnoxiously high, but it also speeds up fishing expeditions.

According to Tony Menillo, a close friend of Gregory’s, the two caught about 35 king mackerel in the past few weeks. They have also caught Spanish mackerel, bonita, dolphin and pompano. But not everything’s simple. Menillo said the kayak can seem like a surfboard when you’re trying to reel in a big catch.

Both Gregory and Menillo have high hopes for the unique fishing kayak. Along with planning to add a GPS system to the invention, the pair is interested to see what they can do this year at the 60th annual Destin Fishing Rodeo.
