BeON Top of Those Crooks: New Smart Light Bulb Doubles as Home Security System

A new light bulb that will be on the market in the spring of 2015 will no doubt out-smart thieves who make their living by way of home break-ins.

The BeOn burglar deterrent, a new smart light bulb that was just launched on Kickstarter earlier this month (November 2014), will be a valuable tool for homeowners who want to scare off burglars, possible intruders, and vandals.

The BeOn smart light bulb is one that learns the lighting patterns of homeowners. With a built-in processor, microphone, and armed with Bluetooth LE connectivity and 800 lumens of soft white LED light output, the bulb simply remembers what rooms are lit during certain times of the day and night, when lights are turned on and when they are turned off, and the order in which lights are used.

And the real bright idea behind this invention is that BeOn mimics a homeowner’s behavior patterns so that when they are away their home will always appear to be occupied. There’s even an app that comes with the bulb so one can manage and control lighting via a smartphone or tablet.

The bulb’s audio sensors automatically light up when a doorbell rings, and the same sensors turn the bulb on when a smoke detector or carbon monoxide alarm goes off.  As well, each bulb comes with a back-up battery inside so that your home has light even during power outages.

The BeON smart bulb is also environmentally sound in that it provides light only out of necessity.

The BeON burglar deterrent, based out of Cambridge, MA, will be a hit among homeowners in cities and suburbs. As we all know home break-ins are a growing concern these days.

“We think people want products that solve problems, versus investing in platforms,” says the company’s CEO Alexei Erchak.

He adds, “We wanted to approach home security the way the experts do, in layers. But we didn’t want to be just another video camera, or a motion sensor, or an alarm. Once an alarm sounds, the break-in has already happened; the emotional trauma is already there. The best home security starts before the break-in. So we embraced an unloved space—the security deterrent.”

BeON will sell its bulbs in three different packages: three ($199.00) – USD), six ($399.00), and nine ($599.00).
