Here are the domestic cars available for under $17,000:
2008 Pontiac G5
The 2008 Pontiac G5 is basically the same as the 2007 G5. It comes with 148 horsepower from a 2.2 liter Ecotec. The inline-4 achieves 23 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. It also comes with GM's 5 year/100,000 mile power-train warranty. They also offer a GT version which costs about $3,700 more, putting it above the $17,000 mark. The G5 also scored very well in terms of safety, bringing all 4 star ratings with one 5 star in front impact.
2008 Chevrolet Cobalt
The brother to the Pontiac G5, it shares many common design characteristics. The cobalt also uses the 2.2 liter Ecotec making 148 horsepower. It also comes with the same 5 year 100,000 mile power-train warranty. A pair of 5's and 4's with single 3 star rating for side impact was awarded to the cobalt. It is a little cheaper than the G5 which can be blamed on the lack of a few novelties and accent pieces speaking in terms of interior.
2008 Ford Focus
Ford redesigned to focus for 2008. It will use a 151 horsepower Inline-4 through either a automatic 4 or a 5-speed manual. The combination is expected to produce 24 mpg city and 35 on the highway. It comes with a variety of extras from the factory and a nicely equipped interior. As with the 2008 Focus, no crash test data was available.
2008 Chevrolet Aveo
As with the Cobalt, the Aveo comes into 2008 with relatively few changes. The GM 5 year /100,000 mile warranty comes standard as well as a 103 horsepower inline-4. The little motor manages 23 mpg in town and 34 on the open road. The Aveo offers similar crash ratings to the Cobalt.
2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser
The famous...vehicle from Chrysler is back for another round it 2008 as well. It will see power in the 150 range and still offers the same transmission options. It is expected to get 21 mpg in the metal jungle and 27 while running free on the 4-lane. The largest selling point is the lifetime power-train warranty offered by Daimler-Chrysler. There was no crash data available for the 2008 PT Cruiser.
2008 Dodge Caliber
Dodge's replacement for the Neon is expected to be very popular in 2008. The base model produces 172 horsepower and offers 24 and 30 mpg city to highway.
