This past July, Twitter alerted the Twitterati
that it would be purging 'spammy' accounts. This led to a major
expulsion of pornbots and questionable auto feeds in the 1000s. For those who were
not tracking their followers closely, many of us woke up one morning to
witness a significant drop in one's follower count. Users soon learned
that hundreds of “friends” with questionable profiles was less valuable
than connecting with a select number of people you can trust, even if
you don't know them personally.
These events prompted me to review all my 'new' followers and start 'blocking' the ones that fell into this category. They were easily identifiable, since most of these profiles normally do not include a photo and usually assign 'numbers' to their Twitter handle names.
So after the "Great Purge," it appeared that Twitter had sent a strong message out to the Twitterverse that it was cognizant of this malpractice and that spam of this nature would not be tolerated.
Subsequently, for the last 2 months, all my followers appeared legit. However, within the last week I noticed an unusual bump in my follower count. And while my ego was slightly inflated as I thought my popularity and influence was gaining traction, I felt I needed to investigate further.
Cam Girls that 'follow' on Twitter
And to my amusement, these attractive ladies, while identified by 'actual' names started popping up. At first blush, they also appeared legit, and once again my ego was satiated. However, upon additional scrutiny, I noticed a similarity in their profiles and profile descriptions. And then this tweet arrived in my inbox.
Most of them were calling themselves 'cam girls' and requesting that I visit their site. In so doing, I learned that the 'cam girls' belonged to a sex chat room titled Cams.com, where you could view them up front and 'personal' in front of camcorders, performing for you 'live' in real time.

The alluring promo states: "to get wild with the live and nude models on Cams.com, add money to your account. The funds will be automatically deducted. as you chat with the models in the nude or private chat rooms!"
Acting like a social network, visitors (men and women) are asked to create their profiles and upload their photos to let the models know more about them! (like that personal data won't be shared with anyone!!!)
Deceptive advertising initially tells you the site is free, however after registering, the first thing that is asked of you is your credit card. But as an incentive, if you add $100 to your account on the first day of registration, you get 10 FREE MINUTES for any recorded show! Additionally, the following features are offered to all Cams.com registrants:
So apparently the RED LIGHT DISTRICT is once again open for business in Twitterville. In its lascivious need to infiltrate our daily lives, PORN has sleezed its way back into our Twitter portals. Here's hoping that Evan Williams, Jack Dorsey and Biz Stone act as quickly to address this issue, before too much undressing is exposed in 140 characters or less!
