Children and Safety Products: Hot Spot Mama's Recommendations

inreach_main One thing all parents have in common is that we are all concerned about the safety of our kids. That's why there was so much excitement around the round baby car seat featured on last week's episode of American Inventor. So I decided to do a posting about two other creative products that may help in protecting our kids.

The first one is a child safety alarm. I've got two young boys so this one is of particular interest to me. Safety 1st makes the In-Reach Child Tracking System. It can monitor how far your child goes in any location; the mall, the park or even your own backyard. One unit stays with your child and tracks their distance. The parent’s unit lets you determine a pre-set boundary. An alert sounds if child leaves pre-set boundary, if child unit is removed or if child presses panic button on his/her unit. It can monitor up to 300 feet and three Child units at one time. I believe this came out in the end of 2005. If you are interested in purchasing this, the cheapest price I found was $119.99 and you can buy it online here.

I also really liked the ionKids Child Monitor & Locating System but it’s a fair bit more expensive. Check it out at www.ion-kids.com. There are other child safety alarms out there but based on a couple of different factors (some have no tamper resistant feature), the Safety 1st is my favorite. PLEASE let us know if you use any of child safety alarms and what you thought about them.

It is essentially a light that attaches to the child's stroller so the stroller can be seen in the dark. The company says it uses a leading edge technology called Electroluminescent Wire, and they are outdoor safe, baby safe, super flexible, and battery operated. People may not think that many parents are out in the dark with their kids but let's face it, it gets dark by 5:00pm in the winter which poses a problem for those caregivers that have babies that fall asleep only when going for a walk and we also have the early bird babies that like to wake up before the crack of dawn. The website only lists stores in Canada that sells the product so if you want it, go to their website www.borderlinetechnologies.com. Let me know if anyone gets this product too.

child alarms

I've seen the child alarms that go around a child's neck. I never bothered getting one of those because my little girl would just take it off. How useful is a child alarm if the child does not wear it.

Um, I think it has an alarm

Um, I think it has an alarm that goes off if the kid tries to remove it? Did you even read the description?

Other safety products

As a result of some stroller group discussions, I've started posting a bunch of stroller-related accessories, many of them safety-related, at www.slingwheels.com, under the products page. This site will eventually be the home for my pending invention...I've added the stroll-lights - good stuff.
