If you’re one of the millions of people who absolutely abhor entering a brick and mortar store to buy things, you’ve now got more options to choose from when it comes to shopping. Yes, it’s online, but not as we’ve come to know it. Online shopping outlets have done such a great job of luring customers away from traditional storefronts that right now shippers can’t keep up. That means that many of the gifts purchased for Christmas presents this year will not arrive on time, even though they were purchased well in advance.

Cyber Monday

A lot of this has to do with the fact places like UPS and FedEx have been swamped since all of the holiday sales began back in November. Where are those pesky drones we were all threatened with last year for deliveries now? All of this is a moot point if you’re willing to download an app and get in your car and drive to the curb of local retailers like Target Best Buy and CVS. The app is called Curbside, and currently it is available for use along the East and West Coasts in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia and in the middle of it all, Chicago.

Free Apps

Here’s how Curbside works: The app is free, which you can’t beat with a stick, so begin by downloading the free app through Google Play or the Apple App Store. Next, start browsing participating vendors’ merchandise and start placing your orders. When your order is ready for pickup, the app notifies you. It’s that simple. Your card is charged by either the retailer or directly through Curbside, and the money is withdrawn for the purchases when the pickup is placed, or in some cases, at the time you collect your pickup. You’ll get an e-mail verifying the entire transaction.

Curbside Pickup

Once you receive a text message informing you your packages are ready, you’ve got 48 hours to hop in your car and tootle on over to pick them up. While many of the businesses will have a Curbside service going on, a few of them may have to be entered where you’ll go to a designated area set up specifically for pickups. The app should let you know that in advance. If you need extra time to get over to the store, just let Curbside know and they’ll work with you to extend your pickup time. The same is true with cancellations of orders or returns.

Coupons & Reward Cards

If the store is offering deals or you have a reward card of some kind, the deals are automatically reflected in the Curbside price for the purchases and there’s a place on the app menu for filing the numbers of your cards under Manage Cards. Right now they support CVS ExtraCare, Sephora Beauty Insider and all RED Target cards. Your 5 percent REDcard discount for Target will also be applied. While Curbside does include discounts that are offered by the retailer, for example weekly specials, coupons are not currently supported.

Local Delivery Services

If you absolutely, positively do not want to go out into traffic and brave a parking lot or you’re unable to for any reason, Curbside says many of their locations allow you to have someone receive goods on your behalf. Before placing an order for pickup, click the Handoff link on the app to complete the setup. The person you select needs a Curbside account and will be asked to show photo ID on arrival. With the thousands of small niche delivery services springing up all over the country, it probably wouldn’t take much effort to find someone locally to retrieve your packages and deliver them to your doorstep.

The Future of Curbside Delivery

After this season, Curbside will undoubtedly creep further into the nation's cities and things like coupons or changes to orders may evolve as the service catches on and grows. Walmart has introduced a similar app of their own for shoppers wishing to use this type of flexible shopping feature there as well. Cool options like these allow consumers more control over arrival times of purchases during the busy holiday season, making it easier to guarantee you’ll have gifts under the tree.
