On This Day In Video Game History: March 4
The PlayStation 2 (PS 2) video game console was officially released in Japan. This was the long-awaited successor to the original PlayStation in Sony's PlayStation series of game consoles.
Manufacturing delays riddled the initial launch of the PS 2, resulting in some gamers selling their own units at jacked up prices on eBay to other people who were desperate to own the video game console. During the period of its release, the main competitors of the PS 2 were Nintendo's GameCube, Microsoft's Xbox, and Sega's Dreamcast.
Sales for the PS 2 reached the 150 million mark on January 31, 2011, making it the best-selling video game console of all time.
