Every year the challenge gets steeper for designers entering the
Electrolux Design Lab competition. Design Lab '09 is no exception. The
theme: "Designs for the next 90 years." The deadline: May 31, 2009.
If you are planning on entering this competition, I suggest you get started.
This 7th annual Electrolux Design Lab commemorates the 90th birthday of Electrolux, a global leader in appliance design and manufacture for home and professional use; thus the 90-year theme of the '09 Design Lab. In designing for the next 90 years, industrial design competitors are expected to shape the way "people prepare and store food, wash clothes, and do dishes" during that period. Designs should be "adaptive to time and space, provide learning and allow for individualization."
A round of finalists will be selected before September, 2009 to present to a distinguished panel of judges in London. The final winner will be announced in October, 2009. First prize in the Design Lab '09 will receive €5,000 and a six-month paid internship at one of Electrolux's global design centers. Second prize is €3,000 and the third prize is €2,000.
Design Lab '08 was won by an Austrian design student, Stefan Buchberger, for his Flatshare Refrigerator, an ingenious solution to refrigerator mess created by one's flat mates, of course. The other finalists were also very forward-looking, but practical in their designs.
"We're looking for really daring ideas and solutions," said the Senior VP of Global Design at Electrolux, Henrik Otto. He added that material choices will be very important, individualization, and a futuristic style in the judging of the competition. Here is Mr. Otto's short introduction to Design Lab 09 call for entries.
