Espionage 101: Tracer Spy Tool

Seth. Seth Plattner. OK name doesn't quite have the same effect, but that doesn't mean I can't dream, right? Tracer has come up with this nifty little Laser Pointer Spy Tool that is supposed to give you your start in the undercover world. For the price it's a decent buy that has some fun bells and whistles: laser pointer, water leveler, tool compartment and tool chuck for attaching tools.

You also can assemble the Spy Tool in a number of different ways so as to suit your spy needs. Go with the deluxe spy tool if you want all the gadgets in one, well, gadget. If you want to keep it simple, piece together the micro laser or micro laser level key chain. Other options are the high powered laser (that uses AAA batteries instead of tiny LR44 1.5V) or the laser level. It all screws together and apart quite nicely so you can mix and match sections as you please, but I prefer to keep it all together so I can have what I need when I need it.

Now, I know what you might be thinking: doesn't this just sound like a Tool rather than a Spy Tool? I say admittedly that a laser pointer, water level and tiny tools aren't necessarily inherent to the emissary's bag o' goodies, but just keeping this thing in your car could prove handy. I expected the laser pointer to be weak and inaccurate, but it's a pretty decent beam. Come to think of it, though, a laser sight might be a little to intrusive for a spy who is trying to remain as hidden as possible. But, we all know what laser pointers are really used for....playing with the cat.

As for the tools, they seem quite small enough to sufficiently pick a lock. I have yet to venture into unlawful entry, but I might lock my sister in the bathroom and see if I can get her out. I've always thought lock picking was a helpful thing learn because, hey, you never know. The tools fit snuggly in the chuck so you don't have to worry about slipping up on the job, and the entire tool is pretty sturdy—something else I didn't expect. All in all I'd say it's a worthy buy for those of us that just want to have some fun. But, just in case you are thinking about getting serious, Tracer also offers a gun mount for the laser pointer. I'll be OK with my cat.
