Flying Panties Are A Thong Of Beauty

Sora no Otoshimono (That Which Fell from the Heavens), a new Japanese anime TV series about a fallen angel is based on the manga comic of the same name by Suu Minazuki. The manga version has been appearing in Monthly Shonen Ace magazine since 2007 and the television series hit the airwaves earlier this month.

While not quite a kid's show (by Western standards at least), the TV series blends youthful characters with more adult-oriented content, such as the revealingly-dressed angel whose physique can only be described as heavenly. But let's get back to the flying panties.

The second episode begins with this ethereal opening theme which features the show credits on a background of flying panties. Truly a sight to see. Don't believe me? Check it out:

Not bad, huh? What I mean is, it's not "bad", as in not inappropriately sexual, overtly perverted or sexist & exploitative. Really the only thing about the video clip that IS odd is that panties are depicted flying without reference to anything most of us typically associate with panties. It's all very innocent, and if there's anything remotely offensive going on, it's happening in your own mind.

The obvious question on everyone's mind is, of course, will the flying panties return in future episodes of Sora no Otoshimono? That remains to be seen; literally. If you're not in Japan to watch new episodes as they air, the diligent folks at Crunchyroll are making them available with English subtitles. Go ahead, knock yourselves out.
