Flying Panties Available In DIY Ornithopter Kits

As God is my witness, I thought panties couldn't fly... at least, not under their own power.

Well I've been proved wrong. Coming this March, Questioners Co. of Japan will be offering wind-up ornithopter kits based on the beautiful opening sequence to the popular Japanese anime TV series Sora no Otoshimono (That Which Fell from the Heavens). Here it is, for those who might be surprised by this, erm, surprising concept:

Ornithopters are flying machines that fly by flapping their wings. The first record of ornithopters in the history books comes from Islamic Spain circa 875AD.

The concept was further and more famously explored by the great renaissance inventor Leonardo da Vinci in the late 15th century. We're not sure what Leo would think about these new Flying Panty ornithopters but he'd probably be delighted.

Questioners' rubber-band powered Flying Panty ornithopter kits are due to be released on March 6th of 2010, will cost 1,000 yen (about $11) each and will come in 4 pretty patterns: blue or pink stripes or polka dots on white. How charming!

As well, it seems there will be an introductory event on March 6th in Tokyo's Chiyoda ward called Sorafes that will be broadcast live on Japanese video-sharing website Nico Nico Douga.

It's expected that dozens of participants will "fly the sky pants" in unison. One hopes, prays even, for favorable weather. (via Gigazine)
