Ford Providing Free Charging Stations for Early Adopters of Electric Vehicles

Ford's electric vehicle line-up is growing pretty rapidly, thanks mostly to the Ford Transit Connect. While charging these electrically powered workhorses is already fairly simple, Ford has decided to make it even easier by installing some 5,000 charging stations in select cities free of charge.

The project, a joint venture between Ford and Coulomb Technologies, will cost about $37 million and includes cities such as Los Angeles, New York, Austin, and Washington D.C. If you live in one of the designated areas, you can have a charging station installed at either your home or business free of charge.

The project also calls for the installation of an array of public charging stations placed around the city. The stations will work with the already established subscription based charging network, and allow users to purchase lots of time in advance. The system is comparable to a pre-paid cell phone and is able to identify the user right at the Chargepoint and bill the user appropriately.
