Futuristic Electric Patrol Car Offers Officers a 360-Degree View

The Armored Spherical Cabin Electric Patrol Vehicle features a soccer-ball shaped cabin designed to provide its two-person crew maximum visibility in all directions.

Manufactured by Suzhou Zhijing Qingyuan New Energy Vehicle Technology Corporation (trading as Zhijing Qingyuan), the distinctive vehicle was developed for anti-riot use by police and paramilitary forces.

Displayed at the recent Security China exhibition in Beijing last month, the Armored Spherical Cabin Electric Patrol Vehicle exists as single prototype designed to meet China's Level-A security standard.

As per guidelines set by the Chinese Ministry of Public Security, the Level-A standard provides protection from bullets fired from handguns and pistols but not necessarily from heavier caliber weapons like machine guns.

The vehicle's flat polygonal windows don't appear to be the roll-down type, which may cause issues on hot sunny days – presumably there's an AC system on board. There is a hole in one of the windows but its purpose is to provide a space for guns to be fired. Access/egress is via front-hinged doors on the driver's and passenger's sides.

The Armored Spherical Cabin Electric Patrol Vehicle also features smoke grenade launchers on the front fenders and a panoramic camera on the roof.

The vehicle's electric motor draws power from an integral battery with a capacity of 15kW/h. According to company staff, top speed is 80 kph (50 mph) and maximum range on a full charge is an estimated 120 kilometers or about 75 miles.

While details on armor thickness were not advertised, the Armored Spherical Cabin Electric Patrol Vehicle's curb weight is just 1,200 kg (2645 lbs), its maximum recommended load is 300 kg (660 lbs), and its turning radius is 4.5 meters or 14.75 feet.

No introduction date was given but judging from evident interest from a variety of police forces during the show, Chinese street protesters may see it sooner rather than later. (via CarNewsChina)
