Galaxy Nexus, Rezound or Droid RAZR? How do you choose?

It is rare that we as geeks have one device to be excited about much less three simultaneously, but that is exactly what happened with Verizon's latest generation of Android phones: Samsung Galaxy Nexus vs the HTC Rezound vs the Motorola Droid RAZR.

RAZRRAZR
The reality is these cell phones are all great tech gadgets; you cannot go wrong purchasing any of these amazing Android devices. If you're like me, when faced with the choice of multiple products I use price as my guide, unfortunately we are out of luck here because all three phones are basically the same cost currently. RezoundRezound With price out of the picture, it is imperative to look at all three and their many remarkable functions to determine which phone is right for your use.

The Motorola Droid RAZR and the HTC Rezound both have 8.0 MP rear-facing cameras, while the Galaxy Nexus has a 5.0 MP rear facing camera. Fewer megapixels is a disappointment however Nexus has made up for this hardware deficiency with advanced camera software.  The HTC Rezound’s front facing camera is slightly better at 2.0 MP while the other two have a 1.3 MP front facing cameras.

Both the Droid RAZR and the Galaxy Nexus have comparable usage time on their batteries at 700+ minutes, however the HTC Rezound only measured in at 400 minutes of usage time, this is a huge disappointment considering the Rezound wants to be a media-based phone. All three phones sport NexusNexussuperfast 4G technology with integrated e-mail, contacts, calendars, social media, hotspot capabilities, Wi-Fi and the myriad of other features we've grown to demand from our smartphones.

As a Google flagship phone, the Galaxy Nexus does not offer the visual voicemail software the other two phones have because it integrates with Google Voice by default. The Nexus also does not offer VZ Navigator or VCAST video.

Essentially many of the standard smartphone features Android phones typically offer, remain the same among these three phones, where they differ are in aesthetics and small RAZRRAZRtechnological advances. The Droid RAZR is the sleekest of the three with an outer Kevlar shell rumored to be capable of stopping one 9 mm round (Full disclosure: I did not test this rumor!). The RAZR is the thinnest of the bunch at 0.28”, weighing in at 4.48oz. Motorola crafted a fine phone with the Droid RAZR and it is a lot of power packed into a small tool.

NexusNexusAlthough the Galaxy Nexus did not have quite the camera capabilities of the other two phones it is impossible not to notice the amazing display screen and size. The Galaxy Nexus is the first phone to market using Ice Cream Sandwich which is an amazing improvement of Gingerbread the OS on most Android phones in the marketplace today. The Nexus is fast to use, easy to learn and fun to play with and includes a beautiful display screen and superb integration with all Google apps.

The HTC Rezound comes complete with the Beats Audio headphones and advanced music software.  Beats Audio’s goal is to redefine how digital music is heard through a portable device. What the Rezound lacks in battery life, it certainly makes up for with its musical RezoundRezoundcapabilities, sleek looks and HTC Sense user interface.

In summary with all of the recent technology advances and the anticipated rollout of Ice Cream Sandwich to many of the Android phones in the upcoming months, it is a good time to be a geek!  If you simply want me to be a tiebreaker this is what you should consider:

  • RAZR: There is no better looking phone on the market today than the Droid RAZR. The fashion conscious should definitely consider this phone if only for looks alone!
  • Nexus: Although the Ice Cream Sandwich OTA push should come in the next few months, with the Galaxy Nexus being Google's flagship phone it is sure to get every update sooner than any other manufacture. For the true geek the Nexus may be the phone to have even with the small disparity in the camera megapixel capability.
  • Rezound: With the HTC Sense software, switching between playtime and business is very simple. This phone is for people who are interested in media and often watch movies or listen to music on their phone but still need full integration with their corporate world.  The Audio Beats headphones are a huge bonus for this device.

So which do you think is the best?

Got my Rezound as a placeholder until the Nexus came out, but fell in love with it and decided to keep it.

HTC Sense

I'm a big fan of HTC Sense myself and am looking forward to the next rev! ICS should be rolled out soon on the Rezound so you'll be stylin.

The speaker on the Galaxy Nexus is a horrible deal breaker

Was so excited to pick up a Galaxy Nexus until I learned that the speaker on the phone is subpar at best and is only about half the volume of the RAZR, which has maybe the best speaker on the market. it's very important if you like to watch videos/movies on your phone and I also use the speakerphone frequently when making calls. Big FAIL from google

I go by the hardware specs

I go by the hardware specs more so than software. Doing a side-by-side specs comparison of these three phones CLEARLY shows that the rezound is superior: it has the most powerful processor, highest pixel density, best camera set, best audio capability, best ergonomics, and a big extended battery available. It also has another feature that i havnt heard anybody speak of, the ability to shoot video in slow-motion!

Nexus hardware

I was disappointed by the hardware of the Nexus and the general feel of the phone. Slow-mo on the Rezound is fun especially when it's snowing Wink

Nexus

Nexus is best overall of the three phones. Where's that promised ICS update? Oh. Well I have my ice cream and I'm eating it too!

nexus wins

rezound = best hardware but bogged down by sense

razr = best design but bogged down by lack of ics and delays in updates

nexus = not the best spec wise or design wise but still not bad fot someone graduating from a curve 3g and an og droid, big leap in software and will continue tobreceive software upgrade support for longer than both devices

nexus wins

Traded nexus for rezound

Returned the nexus for a rezound. Signal reception was a big issue especially compared to other LTE devices in the same areas. Speaker volume and picture quality were not good. Loved ics and the AMOLED screen but what good is an LTE device if it has trouble getting LTE.

The rezound can now have an

The rezound can now have an unlocked bootloader so sense AND all rhe bloatware can be removed! The phone is VERY fast out-of-the-box so imagine how fast the 1.5 dual core processor plus the upcoming ics update will make the rezound perform without sense to slow it down! The galaxy nexus is already inferrior to it now, but with an unlocked bootloader AND ics the rezound is gonna make it look pitiful!

Galaxy nexus obviously. The

Galaxy nexus obviously.

The razr is a gimick phone, and rezound is cursed with htc sense, imo the worst skin for android. Not to mention typical ugly htc phone design.

Whoever wrote this article

Whoever wrote this article has absolutely no sense of style. The RAZR is one of the nastiest looking phones on the market, in usual Motorola fashion. The fashion conscious would steer clear of this abomination. Despite being the thinnest, it somehow manages to give off the impression of a fat chick when you look at it and hold it. Hold it, HTC usually makes even more bloated looking phones.

Samsung's Galaxy Nexus is hands down the sexiest looking of the three, with a thin profile and subtle curves. The camera, despite slightly lower megapoxels, still bests the other two phones' cameras. You should know not to judge camera quality by mega pixels.

I tried getting the Samsung Galaxy Nexus the day it came out, but it was sold out at the first dozen stores I went to before I finally found a shop that had just one left. Seems like a lot of other people are loving this phone like myself.

Galaxy Nexus is the best

I spent a couple of weeks with the Razr and liked it. The phone was fast, the latest Blur was pretty decent anx the speaker was great. The camera sucked for 8MP. I bought a Galaxy Nexus a couple of days ago and love it. ICS is sick. The 5MP camera takes much better pics than the 8MP Razr. The speaker is weak but I downloaded an app from the market that boosts volume to Razr levels. Overall the phone is amazing.

Well, this fat chick LOVES her Razr!

Accurate journalism please

I don't know if this is a tech site or not, but it seems like one, and if so it's a disgrace LeFleur does not seem to be aware that the Galaxy Nexus has the best camera quality of the three even with lower MPs. It's basic knowledge. How embarrassing.

NEXUS ALL THE WAY!

Comming from blur, touchwiz, and sense, i feel like stock ICS is far superior. Dont be fooled by the apparent inferior specs. The nexus is freakin sweet and polished for an Android phone. Look at iPhone running an 800mhz dual core and its still superior to all three, in some regard, but im a geek and I love Android. Rezound, like an ugly muscle car. Razr, a gay ass lotus. Nexus, a freakin Porsche or Ferrari or Lambo. I love being a tech pirate. Nexes all the way!

Razr all the way

It was a tough call but the build quality of the Razr one me over. Can't see paying over 200 dollars for a beautiful screen wrapped in thin plastic, with a sub-par speaker, weaker radio, and 5 MP camera. The Razr cuts through the Nexus like butter.

Besides, I will have ICS soon.... :-)

Not even close

Had a Rent-a-Rezound during holiday return policy, now have a Nexus. Not even close. No 4G issues, aside from the nationwide outages from VZW. Updates and dev support are light years ahead of non-google phones. I wish the Razr and Rezound users luck in waiting for the OTA ICS updates.... even more luck in them actually get routine update support as VZW is so well known for moving their Dev teams onto the next phone and not giving a flying F$#% about maintaining OS updates. Camera is OK on Nexus, and was a bit better on a Rezound... buts lets face it, if you want crazy camera quality there are things out there made for that.... they are called digital cameras.

What app?

I have the Galaxy nexus as well and was wondering what app you downloaded?

Jan 9, 2012

What app?*

What app did you download to allow it to have razr quality sound I mean?

Jan 9, 2012

@razr all the way

"Can't see paying over 200 dollars for a beautiful screen"
Looks like you're missing the biggest point of a smartphone.

"with a sub-par speaker"
Ever heard of ear phones? If you're looking for good speakers on a phone, you're looking in the wrong place. Seems like you're embracing insignificant features of a phone in favor of the central feature of a phone, which is the screen.

"5 MP camera"
The Galaxy Nexus' 5mp camera craps on your razr's 8mp camera.

"Besides, I will have ICS soon.... :-)"
LOL Don't hold your breath.

Idiot?! Lol! I GUARANTEE my rezound will get the ics update before your sorry nexus gets an sd slot, 1.5 dual-core processor, a better speaker, an 8meg rear cam (that records slow-motion video), a 2meg front cam, and 342ppi density!...sooo who's the idiot now?! Lol!

Camera pics are subjective.

Camera pics are subjective. The people who say the galaxy nexus cam pics look better obviously prefer it for its color rendering but for clarity and sharpness an 8meg cam will ALWAYS be better. It's the same reason a 1080p hd tv will always have sharper, clearer images than a 720p hd tv of the same size; more pixel density.
