Very soon the eBay Green Team will begin giving eBay members and eBay staff specially designed reusable shipping boxes. The innovatively green box design is the grand prize winning entry of eBay's yearly spring Innovation Expo. The travels of each box can even be tracked online.
EBay's Innovation Expo is an event that welcomes eBay employees of all ranks to develop ideas for eBay and its members, buyers and sellers. There were many green ideas this year. The grand prizewinner, an eco-friendly box, with a virtual community, will be handed out to a limited amount of participants of eBay: On Location an event in San Jose, as well as eBay Green Team members. 100,000 of these boxes, in 3 different sizes, will be given to them to use. It's a pilot program.
The grand prize winning reusable eBay box is durable, made of recycled material, can be recycled at the end of it's reusable life and is called "simple green shipping." It is actually simple to use, but it isn't just a simple box. There is also a space on the box to write a personal message to the person who receives your box. The person who receives your box can then write a message to the person that receives the box next and so on. This can all be logged in online in a virtual community for buyers and sellers.
The box is designed to be reused many times and by eBay's calculations, "if every box gets reused at least five times, we could protect nearly 4,000 trees, save 2.4 million gallons of water and conserve enough energy to power 49 homes for a year" (ebay Green Team).
