Grasshopper Inspires Entreprenuers In Down Economy

If you remember the TV Series Kung Fu (1972- 1975), you know that David Carradine's character was continuously inspired by his mentor, the blind Master Po. The zen master's ability to uncover life's hidden truths taught his eager student how to become one with his spiritual potential.

During the pilot episode, this key dialogue exchange underscored why the young Kwai Chang Caine came to be called "Grasshopper."

Master Po:
Close your eyes. What do you hear?
Young Caine: I hear the water, I hear the birds.
Po: Do you hear your own heartbeat?
Caine: No.
Po: Do you hear the grasshopper that is at your feet?
Caine: Old man, how is it that you hear these things?
Po: Young man, how is it that you do not?

Recently,a phone system company prophetically re-named itself "Grasshopper" (formerly gotvmail) to re-brand itself as a company of inspiration (in what I am assuming was a feel-good sentiment associated with that memorable TV drama). In an uplifting video they go beyond the typical advertisement appeal of a company selling product and service. Instead they address America's spirit of resilience. It reminds us in a very straightforward, but inspirational way that we are of strong stock, known historically for overcoming hardships.

So what does this have to do with selling business solutions for entrepreneurs? Well for starters, David Hauser, Grasshopper’s co-founder and chief technology officer followed up this inspirational video with a direct mail campaign that delivered (if you can believe it) 25,000 chocolate-covered grasshoppers to the 5,000 most influential entrepreneurs and innovators in North America.

Knowing that small business employees are constantly running around building their companies, and may be hard-pressed to hire someone to answer phones– Grasshopper allows calls to come into one central service,to be re-forwarded to any number of people, in any number of locations. Whether it’s a cell, a hotel, a room in one's basement, or a telephone booth, the call can be transferred seamlessly. You can also receive faxes by e-mail and get voice-mails on your mobile devices, without the hassle of installing any other applications.

According to a recent Entrepreneur interview with Hauser, he believes that "entrepreneurs power this world. They are going to save our economy, and the more attention we bring to that, the better. There are a lot of people can’t be done and it’s a bad time in the economy. There are a lot of no’s going around. Imagine if ... we didn't take risks... because we didn't have the idea, or the courage to start it. Imagine a world where no one did. Don't let that happen!

Be one with the grasshopper, whether or not you think their product and/or service works for you. What's more important than what their selling is their unique way of appealing to the masses with a very uplifting message.
