Hangzhou Police Roll Out "Saber-Toothed Tiger" Anti-Riot Vehicle

Police in Hangzhou, China are getting tough – Ford Tough – when it comes to defusing riots. Dubbed the “Saber-Toothed Tiger”, the heavily modified and armored Ford F-550 Super Duty truck is ready to put the bite on fomenters of urban unrest.

Decked out in Vader Black and bearing a “SABERTOOTH” badge below its grille, the formidable Ford was displayed to an admiring public on February 15th. Somewhat surprisingly, gawkers were allowed to inspect the vehicle up close and personal, even to the point of climbing inside the capacious cabin.

The “Saber-Toothed Tiger” is similar to other armored vehicles built on the Ford Super Duty truck platform including the Sentinel Armored Tactical Response Vehicle from International Armored Group (IAG) shown above. The beefy Fords are a good fit for China as, according to IAG, “the Ford F-550 reduces the cost and lead time for spare parts as they are easily attainable through Ford's global distribution network.”

Reportedly the cost of the vehicle is in the range of 1.6 million yuan or $250,000 – perhaps explaining why Hangzhou's police department would appear to have just one. They do get a lot of bang for their bucks, however. Pertinent features include a night vision video camera, an acoustic crowd dispersal device, and a tear-gas cannon. Police inside the vehicle are protected by bulletproof window shields; should they be fired upon a response in kind can be implemented via camouflaged firing ports. Yep, hanging out in Hangzhou just got real, homies!
