Hello Kitty Portable TV Brings Branding To The Small Screen

Read the words "Hello Kitty" and certain things come to mind... cute, pink, childish and so on. What's surprising about the Hello Kitty portable TV from Exemode is that it's pretty much the opposite of what you might expect. OK, one of the two color choices is black with pink trim (the other is black with gold) but the pink is subdued and doesn't overwhelm the senses.

Techwise, the TV compares well with other portable LCD televisions whose cases don't look like cat heads. You can visit Exemode's product page for all the details but in a nutshells, the 2.4-inch color TFT LCD screen boasts a resolution of 320 by 240 pixels and the built-in lithium-ion battery provides up to 4.5 hours of continuous operation. The set is also fully compatible with Japan's upcoming switchover to purely digital broadcasting, expected to be completed by July of 2011. It even supports closed-captioning.

As mentioned, the black plastic case is available trimmed in either pink or gold, with a rather large rhinestone set into the center of Hello Kitty's trademark hairbow. It actually comes off as sort of elegant. The speakers are set into pseudopod-like protrusions that provide stability when the set is folded for (presumably) displaying on a shelf or table.

The Hello Kitty portable TV is smaller than it looks in these images - just 108mm by 99 mm (4.25 by 4 inches) when closed - and it weighs a mere 165 grams or just under 6 ounces. The price, on the other hand... 12,800 yen which translates to the $140 range. Thanks to Kirin at Tokyo Kawaii, Etc. for discovering this cool item!
