Stars of the YouTube series "Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin'?" have now been immortalized in a video game. Ashly, Anthony, and Papa Burch will be making their debut in the latest piece of Saint's Row IV DLC as Homies (AI controlled allies). I must admit, I'm a little jealous. After all, who wouldn't want to be in a video game?
"I don't know why that exists, but it does," writes Anthony on the HAWP website. "Basically, we met a bunch of cool guys from Volition at PAX and E3 and geeked out at them every chance we could get. Anybody who follows our show knows we are big fans of the Saints Row games and their sense of humor."
That's evident from more than just their work on YouTube. Take Borderlands 2, for example - a game which Anthony wrote for. The comedy in that title, the awkward, tongue-in-cheek, occasionally slapstick attitude of the title definitely shares a lot in common with the general feel of the Saint's Row franchise.
"At some point after we parted ways," continues Anthony, "some dudes at Volition thought it might be cool to do a Hey Ash pack. "We were talking about stuff we could do," one of them told me, "and somebody suggested a Hey Ash Pack and our producer turned around in his chair, deleted what we'd previously slated for December, and just said 'I typed it in the spreadsheet. We're doing it now.'"
"I have literally no idea why they would think this was a good idea, but we decided not to stop them," he added.
So...I suppose I should explain why something like this is so exciting. The fact that Volition has decided to do this basically signifies willful acceptance of new media. Although as an organization Volition is very much a 'traditional' business, the "Hey Ash" pack is ultimately a creation of Internet culture - a creation of YouTube. It's really just an affirmation of how far the Internet's come.
The Hey Ash Whatcha Playin'? Pack is available on Steam for $1.99.
