Chocolate beer is the latest Japanese entry in the bizarre drinks sweepstakes. Imagine the sinfully sweet combination of rich cocoa and full-bodied beer... and thank Sapporo Brewery for bringing such a delightful nectar to market!
"Chocolat Brewery is made from roasted malt and cacao having the characteristic of aromatic chocolate flavor and bitter taste." So says the ad copy for Sapporo Brewery's canned confection, sure to become your sweet obsession.
The beverage is no novelty - both Sapporo Brewery and Royce Confect Co. are well respected leaders in their industries. It may be that the current economic crisis has got these companies thinking of how to increase business, and working together could be cheaper than starting from scratch.
Royce especially shows signs of moving beyond the high-end chocolates they built their business on, if their intriguing chocolate covered potato chips are any indication.
But back to the brew - Chocolat Brewery was only offered to the public as a limited edition from January 14 through 23. If the response is favorable, it's possible Sapporo & Royce may offer it again, perhaps on a permanent basis.
Though the concept of chocolate-flavored beer is appealing, the price is appalling: 1,480 yen (about $17 per 3-pack or over $5 per can) for a pack of three 350 ml (12 oz) cans. (via Japan Marketing News)
