Abstract objects can be a bit weird but people seem to like creations like the following trendy DIY project.

Source: Addicted 2 Decorating
The Contemporary Drinking Straw Pendant Light may seem a bit bright, but that’s the point of the invention. Despite being made out of colour drinking straws, the invention can act as a source of light. To put it all together, you will need be able to do a lot of wrapping, crafting and cutting to make sure it looks exactly like it should.
But in order to start making the cool “lamp” you will need the following:
- 1 roll of metal hardware cloth with 1/2 inch grid.
- A wire lampshade ring with washer top in the diameter of your choice.
- 22 gauge craft wire.
- 1500 drinking straws.
- Pendant light wiring kit (light socket might need to be bough separately).
Sure it looks a bit unusual, but the Drinking Straw Pendant Light can be a great addition to a bedroom or even a rec room. Plus, since the project only requires a bit of skill (paper mache artists will succeed) it’s definitely a worthwhile DIY that saves you the hassle of going lamp shopping.

who could get that many straws?

I'm the creator of this
I'm the creator of this pendant light, and I simply went to my local grocery store, and purchased 15 packages of straws (100 count per package). They were $1 each. Finding straws isn't difficult.

Would look even better with less colors
Having there be all white straws on top and all black on the bottom with them mixing in the middle would look cool.

cheap perhaps
but not everyone can afford to buy that many anyway.

cheap perhaps
if you can't afford to buy that many straws then just go and buy a lampshade that costs less and don't make a lampshade entirely out of straws?

or
could give alternatives like what to do with half a packet of straws (one packet of straws) or less.

Seriously?
You can't afford $15? Then you probably can't afford ANY diy projects...not only this one.

At my local grocery store
At my local grocery store today, I found a package of 250 straws, just like the ones on the light pictured, for $1.49. That's only $9.00 for enough straws to make that light.
