Washing oil off see birds can take about two hours and can really stress out a bird. To make the process less stressful, faster and safer for the birds and volunteers an oil company has developed a washing machine that washes a bird in just a few minutes.
How it works: the bird is placed in a basket, the feet are held in place with a pin, the head is held safely out of the basket. The basket is then inserted into the washing machine. The bird's head is covered with a cap to calm him as the machine washes the bird's feathers. In 7 minutes the bird is washed and rinsed. It can take about 2 hours to wash the birds by hands.

The same oil company has developed a new shampoo that cleans the spilled oil from a bird's feathers, but allows the birds to keep their natural oils. The machine and this shampoo help reduce the time birds are in recovery before they are released back into nature.
