Invention of the Week? Noke U-Lock Keeps Your Bike Safe and Sound

Spring has finally kicked in and warmer temps and sunnier skies are now a reality.

This means that all sorts of people – city dwellers and suburbanites alike – are spending more time outdoors.

A favorite outdoor recreational activity that many of us enjoy during the spring, summer and fall months is cycling.

However, with the good comes the bad: getting around town on your bike is great exercise and invigorating, but getting your wheels stolen is downright bummer.

But FUZ Designs, a company based in Draper, Utah, has invented a new and innovative bike lock that will help in keep the thieves away.

It’s called Noke U-Lock and it is certainly not your ordinary bike lock. It works in sync with your smartphone, has an integrated alarm, and its body is nearly indestructible. It even comes with a bike mount.

“Using your phone’s Bluetooth Smart connection and the Noke app (ios, Android, or Windows Phone) you can effortlessly open your Noke U-Lock with the push of a button. Your smartphone replaces your keys forever,” writes the FUZ Designs team on their Kickstarter project page.

They have raised well over $250,000.00 (USD) on the popular crowdfunding platform and to date they have 2,000 backers.

“At the press of a button Noke wakes up and searchers for your phone or a shared phone. If the phone is within a few feet, Noke instantly unlocks so you can be on your way. No need to re-launch the app or remove your phone from your pocket or purse. It even works when your phone is asleep. If you’d like to add an extra layer of security, you can disable the auto-lock features and require the press of a button in the app to open Noke.”

Even better is that the app is compatible with an endless array of smart watches and the Apple Watch. With the press of a button you can simply lock or unlock your bike.

And while the Noke U-Lock is amazingly strong, it is also equipped with a shrieking alarm system. So once a crook shakes the Noke the alarm goes off immediately and is heard within 50 meters.

The alarm system also goes off if someone else tries to input the “quick-click-code” more than three times.

A user also gets a notification to recharge their battery once it reaches about 20 per cent. If you forget your phone or if your battery dies, a custom access code will open your Noke U-Lock.

The Noke app also lets you share your lock with a friend. You can give them one-time access or regular access, or even revoke access. And in the event that you forget where you parked your bike or you get lost, the Noke app has GPS tracking so you can spot your bike on a quick-map.

The inventors indicate they their lock is the fastest to open and close. In fact they indicate that Noke U-Lock is still about as twice as fast as the next closest competitor.

While the design of Noke U-Lock is attractive, strong, water resistant, and has a long lasting lithium ion battery and completely secure communication, its inventors admit there are some risks and challenges with the launch of their device.

Every project carries with it certain risks,” writes the team on Kickstarter. “The most common risks are potential delays in tooling, obtaining raw materials, packaging, and shipping. While we feel like we have reduced these variables as much as possible, they can never be completely eliminated.”

Regardless of any risks and challenges, the massive support on Kickstarter will help them soon launch their lock on a large-scale commercial level.

The retail price on the Noke U-Lock is expected to be $129.00.

Will there ever be a better lock on the market as good as this one? Perhaps someday a new inventor will come along with something stronger and more technologically advanced.

But in the meantime it is safe to say that for now Noke U-Lock is the “world’s smartest Bluetooth U-lock.”
