Invention of the Week? Personal Communicator is a New Wearable Device that Acts as a Panic Button

Big cities have a cool vibe, but they also harbor criminals of sorts which is never a good thing.

It doesn’t matter where you live in the world crime is just a way of life and a sad reality.

On any given minute somewhere in the world an individual is forced to do something against their will, which is unsettling to say the least, or they are put into a situation where they feel uncomfortable or threatened.

It doesn’t matter – day or night – muggings, home invasions, robberies and sexual assaults – are crimes that negatively impact innocent citizens in so many ways.

However a company in the Netherlands has created a very unique wearable device that could help deter crime and make people feel safer.

It’s called the Personal Communicator, an innovative device that was just invented by HyperHelix. The Dutch company, based in Hilversum, launched their invention on Kickstarter.

Personal Communicator is a small wearable device that serves as a handy panic button and a recording device too.

You can wear it on your wrist, belt, jacket, and even around your neck. When you press the button on it, your smartphone is activated from up to 100 meters away.

There are a number of wearable-tech panic buttons on the market, but this one is unique. First it is arguably the cheapest on the market, and second it is configurable.

“Our invention is a special device with just one function: to inform others that you need help,” says Elbert Kreukniet, the brainchild behind the invention during an interview. “It’s the only one of its kind that does not have a subscription fee and it has global coverage using a cloud service.”

He adds, “The case is made of injection molded Polycarbonate (ABS Alloy). It has high impact resistance. The device itself uses a very low power embedded ARM processor with Bluetooth.”

Here is exactly how this small wearable device works. All you need to do is press the button on the Personal Communicator and it immediately glows neon green and the sound recording starts right away. Your current location is then stored and it can be used to alert others on your list of contacts. Those who are on your notification list are informed once you press the Personal Communicator button and they can listen to the sound recording you made. They can even see your exact location on a map. There is also an optional alarm setting – a loud one – on your smartphone.

The notification platform for contacting people is run on a sophisticated Amazon cloud platform.

“No personal data will be stored in the cloud,” writes Kreukniet on his Kickstarter project page.

“The cloud service is only used to send data to the people you select. There is no monthly service fee, but you need data access from your telecommunications provider to communicate with our service.”

The device is easily connected with both newer and older smartphones. For people to be notified they have also have to install the Personal Communicator App which is free of charge.

Each Personal Communicator is being sold for around $50.00 (USD) and this new wearable device is expected to hit the market later this year or early next year. Another unique feature with this invention is that it’s not a flash in the pan which means that it will last a long time.

Will this new gadget reduce crime and make people feel safer? Criminals tend to be cowards, so technology like this just might scare them off or make them think twice before committing a crime against someone.
