Let's Party Like Its 09/09/09!

What is the significance of 09/09/09 and why is there this slow simmering buzz about it? Well for one, its the last of the single digit dates for this millennium. Next year, we move to double digits with 10/10/10, and September 09,3009 isn't due for another 1000 years.

Apple has hosted a new product introduction launch of its iPods every September for the past few years, and this year doesn't look to be any different with this event scheduled for Yorba Buena, California. The only difference being it will be held on a Wednesday instead of Apple's traditional preference for holding these types of soirees on Tuesdays. This is allow it to coincide with the magical date of 09/09/09.

If there is anyone wagering as to what will be the focus of this year's event, the big money is on Apple announcing some 'innovative features' for their ever-evolving iPod (see iTuning Your Next Social Network). The tip-off was obvious when this year's invitation was released to the public.

While the invitation references the Rolling Stones "It's only rock and roll, but we like it," the 09-09-09 date is also significant as it coincides with the date the new Beatles catalog comes to iTunes together with its remastered digital albums and its RockBand Game release.

The StonesThe StonesSpeculation is now running high that perhaps the Stones, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr together with Steve Jobs may be part of a star-studded cast to kick off a 'perfect storm' kind of extravaganza event.

A somewhat more esoteric use of the 09-09-09 date (except for gamers) is the scheduled release of Diablo 3. Diablo is a dark fantasy-themed action role-playing game developed by Blizzard North and released by Blizzard Entertainment on November 30, 1996. An expansion pack, entitled Diablo Hellfire, was issued in 1997, followed up by its sequel, Diablo II in 2000.

With no formal press releases (just the graphic above) and many disputed online rumors among the gamer set, Diablo 3 is said to debut on 09-09-09, a date that when turned upside down refers to the number of the beast or Satan! (666)!  And since the story of Diablo is based on the war between Heaven and Hell, there may be some credence to this speculation.

Since it will take another 1000 years before we see 09/09/09 again, I suggest you take it in for all its worth. Who knows if you'll live long enough to see the next one?

UPDATE: .This just in ...as I was publishing this post... if your dance-card is not filled yet for this momentous date - Twitter is holding the Largest Tea Party ever online via podcasts!

Diablo III

There's more chance of the world ending than there is of Diablo III being released on 9/9/09. It's not happening. The game isn't even coming out in 2010 either. Maybe 2011.

Why can't it occur in 100

Why can't it occur in 100 years. If all you go by is the last two digits, then 09/09/2109 would still be 09/09/09. Right?!
