Taking a glimpse at the highlights of the upcoming IMM Cologne furniture design show (January 19 - 25, 2009), I spotted the this modular chair by Herlag by KETTLER. How neat, I thought, to have a chair throughout one's life, from infancy to adulthood. But then I read the copy...
Yes, as soon as an infant can sit up, the chair becomes his high chair, and later his booster chair to help him reach the adult table... but remove the little tray and lower the booster, and the seat becomes a child's chair, not a full-size chair.
Okay, I won't be too disappointed that the Child's Multifunctional Chair can't be used by adults, except for small ones. Still, the concept as well as the design is to be commended. And the whole idea of having a memorable childhood chair is a heartwarmer. The Kettler chair is made of beechwood and finished with plywood, so the materials are sustainable -- a great chair to pass on to your children and grandchildren. And somewhere down the line, your progeny will be asking their friends to guess how many generations the Child's Multifunctional Chair has been in their family.
But, Kettler, if you're reading this, will you introduce a "chair for life" next time?
