Men's Leggings Excite Thighs and Whispers on Tokyo Streets

Leggings. Men's leggings. Think of long underwear worn under shorts, and I apologize for putting an off-putting mental picture in your mind. Like it or not, men's leggings seem to be more than the odd statement of far-out fashion... though they are indeed odd.

I'm not going to go as far as to state that men's leggings are a hot new male fashion trend because Tokyo's streets - in areas like Harajuku or Shibuya - have always been a showcase of the weird, wild and wacky. Seek and ye shall find, as several reports of men's skirts and even men's BRA'S a while back proved so well. In any case, I'm reporting on some reporting and we'll just leave it at that.

Watch this video in which various "meggings" aficionados are spotlighted and their leggings style critiqued:

Leggings wearers appear to be mainly young men ranging in age from their 20s up to around 40, and they don't look like typical professionals and office types who make up the majority of Tokyo's street-walkers, for want of a better term. No leggings & ties combos to be seen (which is, perhaps, a good thing).

What do the ladies have to say about what may be a burgeoning new fashion trend? According to the video report, only 38 percent of women feel it's something cool while a solid 62 percent think men wearing leggings are uncool. Of course, the survey assumes those who wear meggings actually care about impressing women in the first place... not that there's anything wrong with that. (via Japan Probe and Asahi News)

Leggings - For Women AND Men

Leggings and tights for men is not a new trend - one that's been around for years. It's time to get over the body image constraints and go for the comfort. Just wear them. Leggings are perfect casual wear for women AND men. Having worn leggings for years, I'm aware of people's comments both negative and very positive. After all, it’s not the leggings on the man but the man in the leggings. Everyone looks good in leggings and some people look great!
If more people, women and men, wear leggings then it will just be another apparel choice. At one time denim jeans were worn only by miners digging for gold. Now they are everywhere and no one asks if you've struck gold.
So never say never - when you do decide to wear leggings, choose a well made pair - not with cotton fibers that bag out over time but a high tech fiber that retains its shape. Go for the comfort and support. Leggings that go to the ankle look better than capri style that chop the leg. Plus the full length leggings support you from your ankle to your waist and give you an energetic lift. Men's Legwear is turning the corner

In addition to leggings, tights (both sheer and opaque) are an emerging trend in men's wear all over the place. It's been growing and picking up steam in the U.S. for nearly 10 years--only gaining widespread notice in the past year or two. I work for ActivSkin (www.activskin.com), the first company to begin selling tights and sheer hosiery for men (10 years ago) and we've tracked a steady growth in sales that has kept us in a growth mode all along. I would encourage everyone to visit my blog, The Nylon Gene (www.nylongene.com) to learn more about it. You'll find extensive discussion covering the various practical reasons for men taking up the hosiery habit (i.e., leg support, athletic applications, colder climate benefits, etc. )
