Earlier this year, Mercedes Benz released information regarding their development of a new Fuel Cell vehicle called the F-Cell. Since then, they have been refining the project and now believe it is ready for small scale production.
The new concept will make use of a 100Kw electric motor drawing power form the hydrogen fuel cell. The electric motor, although small, is able to crank out an impressive 214lb/ft to the ground. Mercedes has said this number will put it on par with a 2.0 liter naturally aspirated petroleum engine. The jump from 0 to 60 mph is listed as less than 11 seconds.
Nestled comfortably under the floor will be a 1.4Kw/hour Lithium Ion battery. A regenerative braking system will charge the battery and act as a range extender for the F-Cell. The battery will also likely act as a buffer to ensure the amount of power delivered to the electric motor is constant.
The total range for the new Mercedes is listed at 250 miles, and the recharge time for the fuel cell is quoted at 3 minutes.
Currently, Mercedes is planning on producing 200 vehicles for lease in both North America and Europe, with additional vehicles being added pending the success of the first group.
