New Robot Can Feel Coins

Robots can do a lot of things, but can they feel? Well it looks like at least one of them can. It looks like a group of roboticist from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The team, which is being led by a student of Rodney Brooks, a roboticist of some note, has made an arm that is dexterous enough to find a coin in your pocket. While that may not sound too impressive by itself, but the pocket was full of other items that made the task harder.

For now the details of the project, in terms of technology. The project is currently being funded by the Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Similar projects, with smarter touching robots are currently used to milk cows. Other next generation touch sensors are being developed by competing universities, such as Harvard.  So, the next generation of robots may be able to feel almost as well as you and I can.
