Not too long ago, the federal government released a plan calling for a 30% reduction in their fleet fuel consumption by 2020. While this may seem like a lofty goal, tossing in a few thousand hybrid vehicles, to include 100 of the first Chevrolet Volts to be assembled, should make achieving it much easier.
While the exact numbers have not been released, it is believed the government will be laying claim to at least 100 of GMs front running plug-in hybrids, with more to come over the next few years. Aside from the Volt, there are rumors that the Dodge Ram Hybrid will also be making its way into the government fleet.
Soon after the White House made their announcement regarding the Volt, GM responded by saying they "are pleased to see that the Federal government is interested in the greening of their vehicle fleet." It's a safe bet that GM isn't the only group pleased by the plan, especially considering the sheer size of the government owned vehicle fleet.
More information should be available as soon as the first examples of the Volt begin moving across the assembly line.Engadget
