Tracking down salvaged material for a project can prove to be difficult and time consuming. At least it used to be. Today PlanetReuse, one of the 14 new technologies, selected as Popular Mechanics Smart Home Green Design Award winners, has made the process much easier.
Planet Reuse is global database of "reusable, reclaimed, and excess building materials" for contractors, homeowners, design professionals, architects, non-profit organizations or any buyer in need of reclaimed material for a project. Sellers can post listing of reclaimed material they have to offer for free and buyers can look through the listings or make a request for reclaimed material for free. PlanetReuse helps the requesting buyer find the requested material saving the buyer time and money. In addition building materials are diverted from landfills.
Searching through PlanetReuse's online database for material requested or offered is simple. It is similar to searching for an offer or want ad on Craigslist or Freecycle. Buyers can use the database to find a variety of materials from: flooring, marble, light fixtures, furniture, toilets, doors, barn wood, streetlights, brick, etc and sellers can use it to find out what buyers are looking for. Adding a request and making an offer are just as simple.
Their objective is to help people save time and money as well as help divert useful material from landfill. "PlanetReuse makes using reclaimed building materials effortless, expertly matching materials with designers , builders and owners to save projects money, serve LEED efforts and sustain the planet " (Planetreuse.com).
