Secure Beginnings Are Breathable, So Safest Mattresses For Baby

Looking for a safer mattress for your baby?

When my partner and I were expecting our first child, we quickly learned that back is best when it comes to a sleeping baby. This is because it reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), which may be caused by babies rebreathing carbon dioxide filled air which cannot escape small pockets around a baby’s face when they are face down. Even with due diligence, our children can roll into unsafe positions while they sleep. Any child is at risk for positional asphyxiation. The people at Secure Beginnings wanted to make the safest sleeping environment for our children even safer, so they created the only breathable crib mattress on the market.

Secure Beginnings offers three options for an alternative to fiber filled crib mattresses: Heaven Sent Breathable Crib Mattress, SafeSleep Breathable Crib Mattress, Mini Breathable Crib Mattress. All three mattresses have the same safety features, but style, colors, and sizes vary.  The mattress is covered with a chemical free sleep surface made from 3D medical grade spacer fabric. This type of material is best for helping your baby maintain a stable core body temperature and is soft to the touch.

The sleep surface stretches over a frame which locks into a wooden base. The base is made with decorative cutouts on the sides to further facilitate airflow around your sleeping child. A polypropylene plastic cover made from recycled milk jugs lines the base under the sleep surface to make it easy to clean fluids from either end of your child.

The Heaven Sent and SafeSleep Breathable Mattresses drop into a standard sized crib, and can be used in toddler beds. The Mini Breathable Crib Mattress fits into a 24” x 38” mini crib. Crib sheets or mattress protectors are not required. Your baby sleeps directly on the Secure Beginnings Sleep Surface. Sleep surfaces come in 12 different colors and are machine washable.

Sadly, 3,500 infants die unexpectedly and suddenly each year. The CDC refers to these deaths as Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID); Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) occurs when a baby one year old or younger dies without explanation. The Back to Sleep campaign, now known as Safe to Sleep, teaches parents how to create safe sleep environments for their babies.

To reduce the risk of SIDS, nothing should be in the crib with our baby, including bumpers, blankets, pillows, or stuffed animals. All of these pose suffocation threats, as does placing a baby on his or her stomach to sleep. When newborns do not have enough air flow around their mouth and nose, they begin to rebreathe the carbon dioxide filled air they have exhaled. This can lead to unconsciousness and death.

A pediatrician, safety product engineer, and an interior designer are the people behind the creation of Secure Beginnings mattresses. They are also people who each know the loss of a baby who rolled in the middle of the night. Their website states that the founders of Secure Beginnings “want to see the air permeable crib mattress be for the crib what the car seat is for the automobile—a standard in safety.”

By creating a mattress babies can breathe through while face down, thus reducing carbon dioxide intake, they are hoping to eliminate the loss of a loved one for someone else.

I have not personally tried this mattress as my little ones were too old. Scouring all the reviews for the Secure Beginnings Mattress system on the web, I found that the reviews are overall quite good. Reading carefully through all the reviews it looks like the biggest criticism is that you really aren't supposed to put sheets or blankets on the bed, so it  can make the bed inconvenient when the baby gets sick or makes a mess. But most folks don't seem to have a problem with that and thought the bed easy and quick to clean and love the fact you can wash the bed sleep liner. It may be a good idea to get an additional Sleep Surface liner.  I found that Walmart has the best prices for these Sleep Liners.  Several reviewers also did mention that the surface of the mattress felt a little rough and it would have been great if  the texture of the mattress was smoother and softer to the touch.   There was also mentions that the company's customer service may be a bit lacking.

For parents concerned about the risk of SID,  the overall quality and revolutionary features make the Secure Beginnings baby mattress well worth considering.  If you are figuring out  what to add to a must have baby products or gifts for baby shower list,  this mattress may be a good pick.

You can find  the  Secure Beginnings Mattress Line here on Amazon and on Walmart here.   Amazon also offers a nice deal on a baby registry and they have a terrific New Mom Program where you get free two day shipping and discounts on diapers and other baby necessities.
