As Seen On TV: Smooth Away - A Razor Alternative?

From what I can gather women find shaving their legs to be a pain in the butt.  Apparently the "As Seen On TV" people found this out as well.

This is the Smooth Away, a razor alternative.  Basically, this thing is a pad coated with tiny crystals that buff away hair instead of clipping it.  It also claims to exfoliate the skin, making it smooth and soft.

Interesting in theory.  But does it work?  I dug around a bit to find out.

Consumers who purchased this item are quite vocal in their opinions, and most of them aren't kind.

The most prominent complaint (aside from shipping issues-I'll get to that in a moment) involved pain.  One user complained of facial irritation and small bumps after using the Smooth Away.  Another suffered from severe swelling of her lip.  Others mentioned a burning sensation after use.

User error?  Maybe.  But the sheer volume of complaints involving pain is enough to give me pause.

To be fair, a few users loved the Smooth Away-a very few.  Others stated that they liked it, but warned against using it on coarse hair (it didn't work), on underarms (hurt like hell), and chins (didn't work there either).

While some consumers were lucky enough to get this item at a store for between $9 to $11 (and they still weren't happy), others opted for the mail-order method... and regretted it.

I suspect this could cost a bit more...I suspect this could cost a bit more...

Shipping costs ranged from around $20 to a whopping $60!  Some claim this is due to additional shipping tacked on for all of the "bonus" items, such as extra pads and a small applicator for lips, that come with the Smooth Away.  Others allege that they were billed for more items than they ordered.

Shipping and ordering mistakes aside, I have to wonder if this is one of those products that only works for certain people-you know, the way that certain medicines work for some, but not for all.

Perhaps you need a certain skin type to avoid the burning sensation?

To find out for yourself, go to As Seen On TV or Amazon to get your very own Smooth Away!

I bought this and I can't believe it, but it actually works! I did the hair on my fingers and my upper lip and it is totally smooth!

Smooth Away sucks rocks

This product is a complete waste of money. It is not easy, it is not quick, and it doesn't work well. It took well over 30 minutes for a small patch of leg hair to be removed. The area was sore afterwards. I would caution people away from it if you need to do large areas.

Smooth Away is a Complete waste of Money

Not very effective in removing hair. The pads are like sandpaper and after 2 consecutive "wax on, wax offs", the pad needs to be changed. Not a very economical option for removing hair.
