Show Your Cats Some Respect With Okocat Natural Cat Litters: Review

Okocat Cat LittersOkocat Cat Litters

If you want to buy your cats something they'll appreciate for longer than 10 minutes this Christmas, why not get them some decent natural cat litter.  I'm not kidding.  If your cats are still doing their stuff in those dusty, clingy, chemical-smelling crystal crumbs, they need some TLC.  And Healthy Pet has just the litter your cats would choose if they could.*  It's called ökocat, and it comes from real green materials called trees.

ökocat is the cleanest cat litter you'll likely ever find, which means you don't have to do too much to maintain your cats' litter boxes  Whether you use the wood or paper variety, you will appreciate ökocat's biodegradeability, flushability, and low mess and odor profiles.  I like the packaging on the ökocat products too.  You can get any of three size boxes - the small is a great travel size - and the boxes are lightweight and easy to pour.

My cat and I tested three of the ökocat litters for two weeks each: Natural Pine Wood, Natural Wood - Clumping, and Natural Paper - each for two weeks.  Here's what we found.

1. ökocat Natural Pine Cat Litter

Okocat Natural (Cracked) Pine Cat LitterOkocat Natural (Cracked) Pine Cat LitterThe ökocat Natural Pine Cat Litter has a very pleasant, subtle and, yes, natural scent; scent-wise this was my favorite.  The pine granules are larger than the other varieties, and you have to be careful not to overfill the cat box.  My cat alerted me to this by not using the box for a few days, but once I reduced the amount of litter, he was okay with it.   The ökocat litters will take up more space in the cat box - the 'granules' are larger, but lighter, than chemical, clay, and grain litters.  There is no visible dust or tracking problem. My cat did not leave his litter box with pellets stuck to his feet or fur.

The ökocat Natual Pine pellets are very absorbent and waste odors don't linger. The ökocat Natural Pine does not clump, but it absorbs 5 times its weight and is naturally anti-bacterial. ökocat Natural Pine Cat Litter is flushable, as are all ökocat litters.  This cat litter should last 4 to 6 weeks for one cat's use, adding occasional pellets to replace those removed with waste.

2. ökocat Natural Wood Clumping Cat Litter

ökocat Natural Wood Clumping Cat Litter hasOkocat Natural Wood Clumping Cat LitterOkocat Natural Wood Clumping Cat Litter a mild fragrance which doesn't emanate from the box, but neither do your cat's fragrances.  The pellets are smaller than the pine, and they do clump pretty quickly.  The ökocat Natural Wood, like the Natural Pine, absorbs up to 5 times its weight, is naturally anti-bacterial, and is flushable.  It lasts up to 2 months for a single cat, if you add a cupful or two every few days to replace the litter waste.

ökocat Natural Wood Clumping Cat Litter clumps pretty well, and flushes, which makes it my first choice.  My cat adjusted to this litter faster than he did to the pine, probably because of the smaller pellet size. He also seems to clean his fur less frequently when using the ökocat products, which tells me he's not wearing his litter on his coat or his paws!  Oh, yes!  Clean paws with all of the ökocat litter products!

3.  ökocat Natural Dust-Free Paper Cat Litter

Okocat Natural Paper Cat LitterOkocat Natural Paper Cat LitterThe ökocat Paper Kitty Litter is a great product for people and cats with allergies.  The wood litter does produce some dust as it breaks down, but the ökocat Paper Kitty Litter produces virtually none.  Like the ökocat wood products, the Paper Kitty Litter is flushable, biodegradable, and absorbable, although the Paper Litter only absorbs 2 times its weight, rather than 5 times its weight like the wood pellets; thus you may find that the litter is moist after use. One cat litter box of Paper Litter lasts for 1 month for a single cat and you can divide that by at least half for 2 cats.

My cat took to the ökocat Paper Kitty Litter faster than the ökocat wood litters. I liked the paper variety least of the three products because it does emit odors and it doesn't clump. Cleaning the cat box was a bit of a hassle because some of the pellets stuck to the floor when they got wet.

Result: So, my cat preferred the ökocat Paper Kitty Litter and I preferred the  ökocat Natural Wood Clumping Cat Litter (without reservation!). One more time when cats just don't agree with humans on what's best for them....  Kitty and I did compromise, however, and are using the ökocat Natural Wood Clumping Litter!
