Single-Use 'Toilet Bags' From Sweden Sanitize Human Waste
A group in Sweden has come up with a product known as PeePoo, a disposable yet recyclable one-usage bag for human waste. Poor or unsafe sanitary conditions are often behind the spread of disease and lead to hazardous environments for anyone living under these circumstances. Inadequate sanitation is most often seen in areas of the world labeled as slums. Back in 2007, the U.N. estimated that the number of persons living in slums passed 1 billion people and that that number would reach 1.39 billion by 2013. In places like Asia and the Pacific, 2 out of 5 urbanites reside in slums, as compared to 3 out of 5 dwellers living in similar conditions in Africa.

Compounding the problem and enabling the spread of disease is the fact that these areas are also often lacking in medical facilities. The threat to public health from living in places like this includes cholera, typhoid, infectious hepatitis, polio, cryptosporidiosis and ascariasis (a species of roundworm), just to name a few. But, with the PeePoo bag, a lot of that could change if these bags can be distributed globally and they catch on. This could be tricky, as old habits die hard and educating people about this product and the difference it could make in their lives may be difficult. As the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water . . .
Safe Sanitary Practices
The PeePoo bag is described as “a personal, single-use toilet, which sanitizes human excreta shortly after defecation, thereby preventing feces from contaminating and spreading lethal diseases.” After using the PeePoo, urea inside the bag renders harmful pathogens in fecal matter inactive within 2-4 weeks. The bags are designed in the form of a slim, elongated outer bag with a wider inner funnel interior that expands the opening while using it. After use, PeePoo is then sealed with a knot that makes it completely airtight.
Sewage Treatment Plants
In essence, the PeePoo bag works as a micro-treatment plant for human waste. Through the assistance of the enzyme urease present in human feces, the urea contained in PeePoo breaks down to carbon dioxide and ammonia. The bags and waste are considered recyclable, in the sense that they can be utilized as fertilizer in household gardens after storing them for four weeks. Each bag can contain up to 27 oz. of feces and urine and remains odor-free for at least 12 hours after use, so they can temporarily be stored in the immediate area, if need be.
To make the PeePoo easier to use, the bags can be fitted on any standard 1-3 liter container such as a bucket, so they would be perfect for camping. The company has also created a specially designed PeePoo seat for sitting or squatting, called the PeePoo Kiti, if you want to customize your makeshift chamber pot for greater comfort. All in all, there are a lot of other practical applications for the use of these human waste disposal bags such as hiking, offshore fishing, working in remote areas without sanitation facilities, travel, outdoor events like days’ long concerts or even living in a one-bathroom house with multiple family members.
