The Ford Mustang is arguably the original American Sports car. The Mustang made its debut back in 1964 and has since been an American Icon that has brought many a smile to the average motorist. In honor of the Mustang's 45th Anniversary, SMS Supercars, owned by Steve Saleen, has designed two high performance models of the original pony car and are now taking orders.
The first new package is called the SMS-460 and will use the same 4.6 liter V8 that comes in the Mustang GT. From there the new SMS 296 Supercharger, unveiled just a few weeks ago at the New York International Auto Show, is tossed under the hood along with a few other supporting modifications. The final result is a respectable 470 horsepower (minimum) and 427lb/ft of torque (minimum).
If this is just a little short of satisfying your right foot, there is also a SMS-460X version that uses a slightly larger 5.0 liter V8 to propel our favorite little Pony. The SMS 296 Supercharger also makes an appearance here and makes use of a revised set heads and stronger internal components to pump out 655 horsepower and 600lb/ft of torque.
To get that power to the ground, SMS decided to offer both a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed automatic on the 460 version. If you upgrade to the 460X, you will have to make due with a close ratio 6-speed manual. Both the 460 and 460X are expected to hit 60mph from a standstill in less than 5 seconds, with a slight variance depending on the transmission being used.
Both of the new Mustang variants will also undergo some serious upgrades in suspension and handling components to handle the extra power. A new Watt's Linkage system has made its way into the mix, as well as a set of large diameter performance brakes on all four corners.
The exterior will also get the Steve Saleen treatment, with the trademarked SMS Butterfly Hood being the centerpiece of his latest creation. A custom front fascia and side skirts have also been added and a set of decals running back both sides complete the 460 package.
For the interior, SMS designers have decided to go with a set of Alcantara and leather racing buckets, with custom SMS Chevrons embroidered into the seatbacks. The dash and door panels are also covered in high quality leather and, upon request, can feature several different embroidery designs. Upon placing your order, you will be able to choose which custom SMS color you would like your interior to be completed in.
SMS expects to release more information about their two new Custom Mustangs later this year, with deliveries beginning in mid-summer.
