So Karaoke Rock Climbing Is A Thing Now

Combine Karaoke with Bouldering (aka Rock Climbing) and you get "Boulkara" – karaoke rooms with rock climbing walls instead of seats! Don't try any “hold my beer and watch this” stunts, however, as alcohol is NOT served to singing and climbing customers.

Bigger & Boulder Than Before!

Does your singing drive people up the walls? If so, this curious concept from Jankara (Jumbo Karaoke Hiroba), one of Japan's largest karaoke cafe operators, is right up your alley!

Perhaps worried about the rising popularity of “bouldering”, Jankara decided if you can't beat 'em, join 'em... literally.

Because It's There

So it was that Japan's first Boulkara cafe opened on December 11th, 2015, in the Kyoto district of Kawaharacho. If all goes well, look for Jankara to open other Boulkara cafes and/or upgrade some of their 140 other locations to proper Boulkara requirements.

That shouldn't be too difficult since Jankara's basically making it up as they go along. As for things going well...

Not The Rock Music They Were Looking For

If these images snapped at the Kyoto location just before opening day are any indication, both karaoke fans and recreational rock climbers should expect to be disappointed.

The former will miss the cozy sofas and chairs; perhaps Jankara assumes everyone in the room will be rock climbing at once. The latter are sure to find the standard cafe ceiling height a tad restrictive unless they're bonafide acrophobics. Either type will bemoan the lack of adult beverages but hey – if you're gonna fall off the wagon it's probably best there's no wall involved. (via Spoon & Tamago)
