Green technology has seen some really promising improvements in alternative energy. And, with Tesla’s recent Powerwall and PowerPack battery announcement and other promising solar advances, the spotlight seems to be shining on solar energy the brightest. Now, a German group called Sonnenbatterie has announced the introduction of the Solar-Plus Storage System, a battery storage system to rival Tesla’s. If you’re wondering where you’ve heard that name before, Sonnenbatterie is the battery company most recently known as the group that absconded with Tesla’s top German technology team. Oops!

Solar Power

With all that engineering ingenuity now behind them, it seems the sky’s the limit for innovative new solar technology with the group. And, with any luck, this latest venture could be the beginning of greater things to come for the expansion of clean energy. The new Solar-Plus Storage System includes a photovoltaic (PV) device, control software to attach to an existing PV system, and a solar-powered battery storage unit for residential use. Owning one of these packages could lead to less use of traditional power sources and eventually weaning yourself off the grid entirely.

Green Technology

Sonnenbatterie’s control system in connection to Solar-Plus tracks things like solar output, residential electricity patterns for usage, local energy prices and even weather forecasts in order to charge and discharge the batteries in a manner that optimizes financial returns for homeowners. It’s the total package for the energy minded and those desiring to reduce their carbon footprint. Systems like these will hopefully someday aid in reducing the world’s overall dependency on fossil fuels in a significant way.

Alternative Energy

If you’re wondering what, if any, differences there are between Sonnenbatterie’s system and Tesla’s, the Sonnenbatterie PV and storage system is said to be fully integrated, whereas Tesla’s Powerwall needs to have DC-to-DC coupling. This amounts to additional cost for Powerwall users. Sonnenbatterie’s system purportedly relies on 2-kilowatt-hour Sony Fortelion lithium-ion batteries for storage and claims the batteries can be used for up to 10,000 charge cycles. Tesla’s Elon Musk says they expect their 7-kilowatt-hour Powerwall batteries to cycle approximately 5,000 times.

Eco Friendly Power Sources

Sonnenbatterie’s website gives readers a model of how the system works. During the morning, when power consumption is high and there is minimal energy production from the unit, the SonnenBatterie system "bridges the gap" with energy stored from the previous day's solar harvest. From late morning to early evening the system is storing up the most alternative energy. As you probably guessed, the main drain on power grids occurs early morning and evening hours with the rest of the day spent producing the vast majority of stored solar energy.

Solar Technology Trends

Recent solar technology advancements besides solar storage batteries include a transparent cooling cloth that’s said to boost solar cell productivity “significantly,” an optical rectenna that captures light and turns it into a direct DC current, and countless wearable technologies. With all this productivity in the sector, maybe it’s time to seriously start thinking about investing in it.
