Spy Camera Series: Watch Out For My Watch
Welcome to the second installment of the Spy Camera Series. We covered covert hidden video cameras integrated into pens in our first post, so do check it out if you missed it here: My Pen's Watching You.
This time let's take a look at another object that you can position obscurely on your desk or cabinet or counter without anyone being any wiser as to what it really is: watches. Wear it on your wrist, leave it on your work table, put it in your drawers--the possibilities of where you can put the spy camera watch are endless.
When most people are up to something sneaky, devious, or illegal, they usually look around for the obvious hidden camera: those shaped like domes, small black dots perched on strategic areas, or the plain-and-obvious video camera at the corner of the ceiling. What they won't be expecting are cameras that have been hidden and integrated so well in a watch, so when they see a watch on your table, they might even peer over to get a closer look at the time. And you, on the other hand, will be able to get a closer look at the culprit's face.
We scoured the net for some of these gadgets and here's the list of what we came up with:
It looks like a plain, run-of-the-mill silver watch but it's obviously not just a watch. This video camera watch by Sphere Tech is on a class of its down that can only record videos without sound to comply with the U.S. wiretapping law. So go ahead, record the culprits legally with this watch. Here's more from the manufacturer:
"Sphere Techs brings you the perfect watch camera you've been waiting for. Unlike other watch cameras, this spy watch records in true HD (non-interpolated) resolution of 1280x720P pixels. Frame rate is an astonishingly smooth 30FPS which puts the quality on par with conventional HD cameras. With 4GB of internal flash disk capacity, you can record up to 75 minutes of video footage. Powered by advanced Micron internal chipset, file transfers and video downloads are easier than ever. Clear and concise instructions manual will guide you on every little uncertainty you may have. Design exclusive for Sphere Techs. 100% satisfaction guaranteed."
Encore sure knows its way with cameras stowed away in gadgets. We covered a spy camera pen from Encore in our previous post and now they're back with their Monitoring Watch Camcorder. It's a silver watch that's about as common as they can get. Of all the spy watches here, this is probably the most non-descript of the bunch, absolutely perfect if you want to get it unnoticed. Here are some specifications for the watch:
- Video Resolution: 640*480; Video Format:AVI
- USB Transfer rate:1.1(Hs)
- Built-in Lithium Battery,Keep on Working for 2 Hours
- No Need to Install Drivers for Windows ME/2000/XP/MAX OS 9.2.2 or Higher Version Windows(Except Windows 98)
- Supports Video and Voice Recording Function"
Take still photos or videos with this watch that is also waterproof as well. In the rare case that the culprit takes the precaution of, say, hosing down your entire desk with water or sets fire to your office (triggering the water sprinklers) then you can be sure that your video surveillance is still safe. The odds of someone actually doing that are slim, but hey, it could happen! Here's more about this spy camera watch here:
- Records high resolution color video and sound through a discrete lens and microphone
- Fancy design, fully functional watch

Now here's a classic watch for the ages. It features a black strap that would look fantastic for both formal and casual occasions. Once again, the design is discreet and doesn't draw too much attention to it. Just what you need if you want to catch thieves or wayward employees who are up to no good. Here's more about the device here:
- Multifunctional watch with built in camera and microphone, taking photo, recording video and audio, USB drive
- Internal memory: 4GB
- Camera format: AVI; photo format: JPG format
- Rechargeable built-in lithium battery, continuous working for about 2 hours
- Easily attaches to most computers via the USB port to load your video files, no need for driver installation if the operating system is windows ME/2000/XP/MAC OS 9.2.2 or above"
As we mentioned earlier, it's important to keep in mind that these devices should be used appropriately and legally. We all know what will happen if you use these watch video cameras to spy on other people or even worse, try to blackmail them with footage you may have. You are bound legally and can be sued if you do that, so know your rights and your limitations.
Use these video camera watches to your discretion but use them responsibly. For everyone else (except thieves and criminals and the like), make sure to watch out for any watches pointed your way.
