Star Trek: Where No Wine Has Gone Before

Space -- the final frontier. These are the vintages of the Starship Enterprise. Yes, indeed Trekkie fandom has reached a new high (or low if you don't get it). There are three varieties of Star Trek wine available for The City on the Edge of ForeverThe City on the Edge of Foreverpreorder from the members-only wine marketing website Vinport. For adult Trek fans the world over it is finally time to reach "nerdvana."

The wines are named for three of the most popular and memorable episodes from the original series. They are from the Viansa Winery in Sonoma, California. Each wine is a medium-bodied red that is "easy drinking." Each is also a special blend of Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, Dolcetto, Tinta Cao, and Tempranillo that come together into a single wine that has depth and character.

The City on the Edge of Forever, Mirror Mirror, and The Trouble With Tribbles are available by the single bottle, in a three-bottle sampler, or in half or full cases. The wines are expected to be released in approximately eight weeks.

If Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, the Great Bird of the Galaxy, is rolling over in his grave it is so that he can sit up and have a glass.

The Trouble with TribblesThe Trouble with TribblesThese wines are a limited edition, so you may want to get your preorder in now. There are only 1,701 cases available. Why such an odd number? Any good Trekkie knows that the Enterprise's identification number is NCC 1701. So there is great significance in the number.

These Star Trek wines also give Trekkies everywhere a chance to really put their Klingon Corkscrews to good use without having to just imagine that they are drinking Saurian Brandy or Klingon Blood Wine.

There is just one question left regarding the wine -- what would Sheldon Cooper think? It seems that this wine is something that the geeks on The Big Bang Theory could hardly overlook. Such a big new Trek-related product is important news, especially since it is coming out the same summer as the latest Star Trek movie.

Drink long and prosper!
