Sushi: Dutch Designer Blends Japanese and Moroccan Design For Italian Design House

One of the more global and intriguing furniture designs I've seen this year is Moroso's Sushi Collection, designed by Edward van Vliet Studios.

Large Moroccan pouffes become bases for elegant obi-styled pillowed chairs.  Rectangular futon-styled sofas are covered in richly-colored, geometric patterned textiles, juxtaposed to Japanese shiny pastel sea-designs  Yet, somehow, Sushi manages to keep its integrity.

Present in several pieces of van Vliet's fabrics for wall and furniture is the embroidered carp, a symbol of strength and perseverance in the orient.  By legend the carp is the only fish that can jump the Dragon Gate waterfall on the Yellow River, and if the carp does jump the waterfall, he will become a dragon.

For global furniture, Sushi is a design that does not appear to be suffering from economic woes.  In fact, it looks quite well-off!  Sushi debuted this year and has already been featured in three international design shows in Amsterdam, Milan, and New York.
