The Department of Energy has been tossing around funding for pretty much every kind of alternative energy vehicle. However, the funding was originally limited to 4-wheeled vehicles, ruling out some of the manufactures completely. Now, congress has finally made a decision as to the future of DOE funding for 3-wheeled vehicles.
The decision came down to allow 3-wheeled vehicles to receive funding, however they must meet a few stipulations. The wheels must be enclosed, which is most likely a safety precaution due to the lack of extensive testing. Also, the vehicle must get at least 75mpg while carrying 2 adult occupants. This is especially important as it would be easy to make a single-seat, three-wheeled vehicle capable of well over the 75mpg minimum.
The funding must also be approved by the DOE, which will examine each applicant on a case-by-case basis before allowing any money to change hands. However, the decision should make it a little easier to get such funding.
