Top 5 Best Baby Monitors

Perhaps you've just found out you're expecting, or your new family member has just arrived - chances are a quality baby monitor is on your shopping list. There are so many available in today's technological world - some still allow you to simply hear sounds coming from the nursery, while others feature video screens and even movement sensors. While your options may truly seem endless, there are a select few on the market right now that are continuously rated as best by parents across the nation. Here are my picks for the best baby monitors available in the market today:

1. VTech Communications Safe & Sound Digital Audio Monitor

VTech is a brand that will become quite prolific in many homes as the baby toys begin to accumulate, but they are also great at gadgets for parents too. The Safe & Sound Digital Audio Monitor features a 1000-foot frequency range and both a visual and vibrating alert system. Hate dragging yourself out of bed for every little thing? With this system you can talk to your little one through the intercom and also use its included nightlight to bring security as they sleep.

One downside to the VTech Safe & Sound Digital Audio Monitor? Some have complained about its tendancy to "lose" its connection, which can wake you up with a beeping alert even though all is well with baby.  It also does not hold a battery charge well, so be sure to charge it up during the day.

However the price is right - it's available for only around $30 online.

 2. Infant Options DXR-5 2.4 GHz Digital Video Baby Monitor with Night Vision

Dad will love that this video monitor just doesn't have video - it has NIGHT VISION! Beyond that, it's fairly free of typical gimmicks you see advertised with baby products. It has a 150 foot indoor range, and an 800 foot outdoor. It also has a bright screen with a special battery that allows the monitor to work portably for hours. Some parents are concerned with the possibility of others viewing images of their little one - this monitor comes with a secure FHSS technology that transmits both video and audio securely. It's difficult for anyone to intercept these encrypted feeds.

The Infant Optics DXR-5 2.4 GHz Digital Video Baby Monitor with Night Vision is available online for about $100 and is often eligible for free shipping on Amazon.com.

 3.  Angelcare Baby Movement and Sound Monitor

The Angelcare Baby Movement and Sound Monitor aims to bring parents peace of mind by not only monitoring sound but baby's breathing too. The included movement pad fits under the crib mattress to sense every move your baby makes. If  no movement is detected for 20 seconds, an alarm sounds. The monitor transmits up to 820 feet and also features a lightlight and room thermometer to ensure your baby is resting in a safe and comfortable environment.

Of course, an alarm sounding falsely can rattle the nerves of any new parent, and this definitely happens from time to time with the Angelcare Baby Movement and Sound Monitor. Be sure to turn off the alarm on the nursery side - or your infant will be jolted awake as well.

 4. Summer Baby Touch Color Video Monitor

This video monitor boasts an impressive range of 400 feet and features a 2-way talk back feature that will allow you to comfort baby easily without crawling out of bed. Sometimes all he needs is to hear your voice, and this monitor will allow for it.

The monitor features a touchscreen that works much like a smartphone - control the camera's zoom, video volume and brightness settings without ever having to interact with the base. A magnetic docking station is also included so you can stick the monitor wherever's convenient. Battery life is advertised at 10 hours, though it's really closer to six. As with most affordable video monitors, the picture quality isn't always the greatest - but you still get clear reassurance of your baby's safety through a visual monitor of them wherever you're at.

The Summer Infant Baby Digital Touch Color Video Monitor is available for purchase online for around $200, and is also sold at some retailers.

 5. Philips AVENT Basic Baby Monitor with DECT Technology

Why spend almost $100 on a baby monitor without video? It's simple to understand when you hear the difference between a baby monitor filled with white noise and interference versus one that is clear in reception and able to only awaken you when it's necessary. This Philips monitor also comes with adjustable sound sensitivity and LED lights that notify you of the noise level in baby's room. Add this in with a nightlight and talk-back technology and you were both sleep like babies.

One downside - it may be a bit TOO quiet - some have struggled to hear clearly on this monitor, as the volume settings are a bit fickle and are all pretty soft. It completely depends upon the individual and house set up, but if you want a monitor that will alert you loudly, then this may not be your best choice. The Avent Basic Baby Monitor is ideal for someone who wants technology combined with simplicity.
