After first introducing the Up! Concept, Volkswagen hinted that an even more fuel efficient vehicle was in the works. At this year's LA Auto Show, the German Automaker brought us the Up! Lite concept, which could claim the title as the most fuel efficient four seat vehicle in production.
The Up! Lite will feature an 800cc diesel engine connected to a 7 speed DSG gearbox. Thanks to the small displacement engine and 7 forward gears, VW is able to squeeze 70 miles per gallon combined fuel mileage. While this is only an estimate, being off by a handful won't change the overall effect.
A large part of the exceptional fuel economy can be attributed to the 1,530lb curb weight of the Up! Lite. Keeping the weight so low was no easy task but, thanks to the heavy use of aluminum and carbon fiber, VW was able to produce a featherweight vehicle without compromising structural strength.
The original Up! Concept is set to go on sale sometime in 2011, with the Up! Lite's future relying on the success of the original Up!. Car and Driver
