Want Your Ashes Launched Into Space?

Space may be the final frontier but for your dearly departed it can also be one last wild adventure. With the help of Mesoloft, the ashes of your loved one can be carried through the atmosphere to the near reaches of space via balloon. From there you can release the ashes and let your loved one drift slowly and gently back to earth on the wind, rain, and snow to replenish the earth with the nutrients remaining in them.

When someone passes away and is cremated it is a fairly common thing for the family and friends to come up with a thoughtful and creative way to handle the ashes beyond having them stuffed in an urn on the mantle. While many are scattered in the mountains or ocean, companies are springing up with more inventive ways to dispose of these remains. One such company is Mesoloft.

Mesoloft uses a balloon to take the ashes up to a height of 20 miles, or what is known as Near Space, before releasing the ashes. To give you an idea of how high up that is, to go into orbit you have to get to 62 miles. Once the balloon is high enough the ashes are released via a trap door. They travel around in the atmosphere for weeks and even months before they begin to descend all over the planet onto mountains, deserts, and oceans. What a great tribute for someone who loved to travel or always dreamed of traveling -- not to mention of people who have long dreamed of space travel.

GoPro cameras are mounted on the balloon frame so that family members can see the release of the ashes for themselves. GPS allows the family to track the ashes on their journey to edge of space.

If you have any concerns about the environmental problems that this may be creating, in 1997 the EPA decided that the aerial scattering of ashes is safe and has no significant impact on the environment. The act of cremation happens at such high temperatures that the ashes are purified and sterile.

There are two different options available for sending your dearly departed into near space. They include launch, release, a video, and a book. The more expensive option also includes a custom launch destination.

This is one way to make sure that your loved one really does go to heaven -- at least for a little while.
