Generally speaking, robots do jobs that humans do not want to, or that
are too dangerous to be done safely. That is why the bomb diffusing
robots has become a staple of both law enforcement teams and specialized
military units. These robots, which can help to scout the area and
eliminate the threats of life ending explosive devices, get their start
in life in a rather unusual way.
They battle it out in a rodeo. The event, which is formally named the Western
National Robot Rodeo, is currently taking place in Albuquerque, New
Mexico this year. Folks in New
Mexico are no strangers to this rodeo, this is the seventh year in a row that the event has been held by Sandia
National Laboratories. The city will play host to teams of bomb
diffusing robots (and their operators) from around the country.
The rodeo pits the bots against each other in 10 events. While the
events change each year there are always a mix of both indoor and
outdoor courses to be run. Each course will feature either an explosive,
or some other kind of material that could be hazardous.
Sandia National Laboratories is a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin.
