Tron: Legacy: Opening December 17, 2010
Just a quick little blurb for all of you readers following the development and marketing of Tron: Legacy, Walt Disney's follow-up to the 1982 film, Tron.
The Hollywood Reporter has announced Disney's bold move to plow ahead on a third Tron film-eight months before Tron: Legacy even hits the theaters!
Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, writers of Legacy, have been tapped to develop the third film. Rumors abound that they may be attempted to use the third film as the end of a trilogy-thus tying any loose ends created in the first two.
The director of Legacy, Joseph Kosinski, and the cast have not yet been secured to return-though options were placed in their original contracts.
This news has me wondering... With the viral nature of the marketing campaign for Tron: Legacy, just how much of this announcement is designed to build up more anticipation for the soon-to-be-released film?
Disney has already produced a travelling "Flynn's Arcade," multiple web sites, fictitious newspapers detailing character history, a global contest which led to a screening of the film's trailer, monorails coated with full-length light cycle decals, and now this.
They either have a lot of faith in their product or are exploring new territory when it comes to marketing. I kind'a hope it's both...
